Lab Equipment General Laboratory
CENTIMETER RULER Used for measuring length or width of an object
GOGGLES Eye protection
Graduated Cylinder Very precise glassware for measuring liquids
Erlenmeyer Flask Used for measuring volatile liquids or liquids that release gases. Also reduces splatter.
Forceps For holding small items and for holding skin/muscle etc. during dissections These are not called tweezers in the science lab.
Medicine Dropper Used for dispensing liquids drop-by- drop
Funnel Used for moving liquids from one container to another
Test Tube Rack For securing test tubes
Test Tube For liquids and microbiology cultures
Test Tube Clamp For holding test tubes, especially hot ones.
Test Tube Brush For cleaning test tubes
Beaker For measuring and storing liquids, not as precise as a graduated cylinder
Electronic Balance For obtaining the mass of something
Weighing Boat Used to mass a granular or powdered substance (protects the balance)
Ring Stand with Ring Ring stands are used to hold glassware in place during an experimental procedure
Buret Clamp Attachment for a ring stand that secures a buret.
Pipet Used to dispense liquids drop-by-drop or by the mL
Wash Bottle Used for washing
Evaporating Dish Is used for heating stable solid compounds and elements as well as for evaporating nonvolatile solutions
Pipe Stem Triangle Used to support a crucible when heating over the burner.
Spot Plate Used in microchemistry experiments (ones that use very small amounts of a substance.)
Thermometer Used to measure the temperature of a liquid
Timer Used to time experiments
Labeling Tape Used to label glassware NOTE: This is special tape that stays on wet items- it is very expensive!!!!!!!
Glass Stirring Rod Chemical resistant rod for stirring liquids
Bunsen Burner Used to heat nonvolatile liquids
Crucible with lid Used to heat solids, especially metals, to very high temperatures.
Tongs Used to pick up hot items. There are specific tongs for specific items – i.e. beaker tongs, crucible tongs, etc.
Wire Gauze Used to support glassware over a burner. May be used with a ring stand or tripod.
Scoopula and Spatula Used to transfer solids. Never insert into reagent bottle and never use bare hands.
Striker Used to light a burner. Expensive – do not operate just to watch sparks fly!!!
Rubber Stoppers and Corks Used to seal glassware – flasks, test tubes, etc.
Mortar and Pestle Used to grind solids into a fine powder.
Watch Glass Used to hold a small amount of solid.
Tripod Used to hold items over the burner.
