When and where is it celebrated? Every year on the 8 th March (normally the 67 th day in the year) an international women’s day is celebrated. It is celebrated by 68 different countries (mostly in eastern Europe), one of them is Russia. The celebration is devoted to females of all ages, especially ones that have been in armed conflicts (i.e. violence and are single parents). Many children are at school during this day, so they normally celebrate there, other people celebrate at home, in the pub and various other places, but sometimes they get a day off! © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. How is it celebrated in Russia? On the 8 th May traditionally the males give the females presents; flowers, chocolates and other types of gifts. At school children normally celebrate by giving flowers to their teacher and having parties! Many children perform plays and sing songs for all women. On the TV there is always a big show which is dedicated to all the millions of women in the world, which may contain famous comedians and singers. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. History On March 8 th 1857, many women who worked in the textile industry walked through the streets of New York protesting against low wages and terrible working environments. They demanded the end of child labour and giving all women a chance to vote. In 1910 during a Copenhagen conference, the 8 th of March was announced as an official international women’s day. But later in 1913 this celebration came to Russia. Ever since this has become a holiday and a day of enjoyment and love. © Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education.
