Culture Of Russia How to Survive in a Russian Household

Dining Before meals Arrive on time, no more than 15 minutes later than invited Remove outdoor shoes, you may be given slippers to wear Dress well, clothes that you might wear to the office, dressing well shows respect for your host Expect to be treated with respect and honor Offer help to the hostess with the preparation or clearing when the meal is served During meals Table Manners are necessary, the fork is held in the left hand and the knife in the right hand while eating The oldest or most honored guest is served first Do not begin eating until the host invites you to eat Second helpings are urged Let men pour drinks for women next to them Do not get up until you are invited to leave the table

Gift Giving Etiquette Families and friends give gifts on birthdays, New Year, and Orthodox Christmas If you are invited to dinner or meal, bring a small gift Male guests bring flowers Do not give yellow flowers Do not give gifts to a baby until after the baby is born. It is bad luck to do so sooner Russians often protest against gifts out of politeness, but if you offer the gift again afterwards, it will usually be accepted
