Registration Timeline Tuesday, February 23– Presentation and course selection materials given by SHS counselors at middle schools Tuesday, February 23 – Welcome Night at SHS starts at 6:30pm Monday, February 22 – March 1 Student Access open for students to input requested course selections
Timeline (cont’) Monday, March 1 – Students submit course selection paperwork to teachers Online access to course requests closes at midnight Monday & Tuesday, March 8 & 9 – Access opens as VIEW ONLY for students/parents to review requests to ensure accuracy Wednesday, March 10 – Any changes are due to counseling office with parent signature on this day.

Class of 2014 Graduation Requirements
Requirements 1. Complete required graduation credits/classes 2. Obtain a Certificate of Academic Achievement – HSPE (formerly WASL) 3. Complete Culminating Project 4. Craft an annual High School and Beyond Plan
How will I earn HS credits? t Two semesters – 18 weeks each t Two grading periods on transcript for each year of HS (semester 1, semester 2) t Transcript is the official record of your high school classes & credits t One semester course =.5 credit t One year-long course = 1.0 credit
High School Credits t If you pass all of your classes you will earn 6.0 credits each year of High School t 6.0 credits/year x 4 years = 24.0 credits t Total number of credits needed for graduation = 22.0 credits

What do I take in 9th Grade? 1. English 9 2. World studies 9 3. Math 4. Physical Science 5. Elective - Software Technology, PE, Health 6. Elective (1 year-long class* or 2 semester- long classes) *Most common are Foreign Language, Music, PE
Humanities Option #1 – Block ENGLISH 9 and WORLD STUDIES 9 t 1 classroom t 2 consecutive periods (i.e. 1 st & 2 nd ) t 2 different teachers t Integrated curriculum – subjects relate to each other
Humanities Option #1 – Split Block ENGLISH 9 and WORLD STUDIES 9 t 2 separate classrooms t 2 separate periods – may or may not be back to back t Integrated curriculum – subjects relate to each other
Humanities Option #2 – HONORS BLOCK t 1 classroom t 2 different teachers t Integrated curriculum t Recommend B+ or higher in 8 th grade Humanities classes t A successful honors student should be intellectually curious, enjoy reading & read on a regular basis, possess strong study habits
Humanities Option #3 – SAIL 2 classrooms, 2 teachers Same curriculum as English 9 and World Studies 9 For students who struggled in LA/SS in middle school Smaller class size, more discussion- based Filled by counselor recommendation
Math The math sequence is: t Integrated Algebra A and B (8 th grade math) t Algebra I (with Algebra 1 lab upon recommendation) t Geometry t Algebra II t Advanced Algebra, Pre-calculus, Math Methods I, or Statistics *Math classes are taken in sequence. Classes cannot be skipped.
Science t Virtually all 9 th graders take Physical Science t Challenge Exam to place into Biology t Information sent home in March about the Challenge Test
HS Graduation Requirements - PE t 1.5 credits = 3 semesters t 1.0 MUST be done through classes t The remaining.5 credits can be done outside of school: t School Sports (.25 waived for each school sports season, 2 season maximum) t Outside credit
HS Graduation Requirements – SOFTWARE TECH t Software Tech is a required class t 1 semester (.5 credit) t Two ways to complete requirement: t 9th grade Software Technology class (Earns CTE/Oc Ed credit) OR t Pass the Challenge test (does not earn CTE/OC Ed credit)

Equivalency Courses Equivalent courses are those that satisfy more than one graduation requirement. A list of equivalency courses for your class is included in the course catalog. Equivalency applies to meeting high school graduation requirements only. It does not diminish the number of credits required for graduation; it may change the courses needed to fulfill graduation requirements. Equivalency does not apply for meeting core requirements for college entrance.

CADRs – College Academic Distribution Requirements English 4 years Social Studies 3 years Mathematics 3+ years Washington in-state public universities require: Classes : math in senior year (can be Algebra 2) or 3 years through Precalculus
CADRs (Cont’) Science 2-3 years * – Recommended that students take a Physics or Chemistry class World Languages 2-3 years Fine Arts 1 year Academic Electives (math, history, English, world language, science & fine arts) Always check with colleges for specific requirements!

International Baccalaureate (IB) IB information on the Skyline Website IB IB curriculum is divided into Higher Level courses (2 years of study) and Standard Level (1-2 years of study) taken during grades 11 and 12. IB classes are open to juniors and seniors only It is not necessary to pursue the IB diploma in order to take IB courses.
Middle School Credits in Math & World Language Students may elect to have the letter grade and credit applied to their high school transcript for qualifying world language and math classes from middle school. Once a class has been added to your transcript it cannot be removed.

Student Access Enter course requests into the computer through Student Access You will need to select Skyline from the drop- down menu at the top of Student Access Step-by-Step instructions, Student ID and password are in your course selection packet Turn in all completed & signed forms to teachers on Monday, March 1
