Objectives for the Lesson TLW describe and demonstrate safe practices to use during field and laboratory investigations. (TEKS 1.A – Chem, TEKS 2.A – Princ Tech) TLW know specific hazards of chemical substances as summarized on Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) (TEKS 1.B – Chem, TEKS 2.B – Princ Tech) TLW describe and demonstrate proper waste management and/or recycling of lab wastes. (TEKS 1.C – Chem, TEKS 2.C – Princ Tech)

Safety, Health, & Environmental Protection are #1 Priority when doing lab or field investigations

1. NO food or drinks in lab. NEVER taste chemicals. 2. Rinse chemicals off immediately if on skin, eyes or clothing 3. Check How to read a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)How to read a Material Safety Data Sheet

1. Be sure to keep water away from electricity 2. Check all cords for cracks or tears

1. Use flammable chemicals in small & measured amounts 2. Only mix chemicals together as detailed in lab procedure or instructed by teacher

1. Many chemical reactions make gas 2. Avoid inhaling or smelling chemical fumes – waft or use fume hood as directed

1. Seek ways to minimize or recycle chemical waste. 2. ALWAYS dispose of waste properly per lab instructions or your teacher.

1. Keep your hands away from your face, eyes and mouth. 2. Wash hands thoroughly after doing a lab

Be a SLAC-er For each lab we will use the SLAC… Safe Lab Analysis Card Link to SLAC Let’s fill one out together for a hypothetical lab

Small Group Work “The 3 P’s”…. Potential Hazards, Precautions, and PPE

Review

Independent Practice Complete the Safety Symbol worksheet Read, understand, and sign the Lab Safety Contract. Take it home to have your parents/guardians read and sign. Return completed contract by Wednesday (Friday at the latest)

Enrichment Activity (Extra Credit) Prepare posters of a lab safety/environmental rule by hand or computer graphics. One per student worth 10 points on next test.

Coming Next Class…. Table teams will rotate to various lab stations discussed today and: –Identify P otential hazards –Identify P recautions –List proper PPE –Use the 3 P’s to properly conduct the experiments
