HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?

REPRESENTATION My opening sequence contains three characters, all of which are young white males. However, the audience can see an obvious difference between them through clothing. The first character you see is wearing a shirt and tie, which usually represents a person as reasonably wealthy and respectable, but in this case the characters shirt is un-tucked, his tie looks quite messy, his top button is undone and his sleeves are rolled up. This suggests that the character is stressed or nervous and it also gives the indication that he has just come from work.

REPRESENTATION The two youths are dressed in hoodies and track suit bottoms and just from seeing them the main character is frightened and thinking about how he’s getting out of the situation. The youths are hanging around outside which is a stereotype saying how all youth loiter and have no real purpose for being there. The youths are wearing their hoods up and have their hands in their pockets, which suggests they are trying to hide their faces and also that that might have something dangerous in their pockets.

REPRESENTATION However, the main character is the one to make the first move, he starts to run before the youths had even moved and this represents him as being paranoid about the youths and that he felt threatened just from their presents. Once the chase begins the audience may think that the two youths are just thieves, but then they pull out guns and one of them tries to shoot the main character. This represents the youths are very dangerous but also irresponsible because they fire their guns in a residential area and so anyone could hear but the youths don’t care about the consciences and therefore they feel even more dangerous.
