Graphing Motion

A. Motion 1. Can be shown on a line graph a.Plot distance (or position) against time. b.Time: Horizontal, x -axis c. Distance:Vertical, y -axis 2.A point on the graph represents the location of an object at a particular time.

B.Slope of a line 1.The steepness, or slant, of a line on a graph. 2.Tells how fast one variable changes in relation to the other variable. (The Rate of Change) 3.Since speed is the rate of change of distance in relation to time, the slope of a distance-time graph represents speed.

Slope of a line, continued 4.The faster the motion, the steeper the slope. 5.A constant slope (straight slope) represents motion at a constant speed.

C.Calculating Slope 1.The slope of a line is its rise divided by its run. Slope = Rise Run a.rise = the vertical difference between 2 points b.run = the horizontal difference between 2 points

D.Different Slopes 1. Not all moving objects travel at a constant speed during a trip. 2. A horizontal line, or one with no slope, shows an object that is not moving at all. The End
