Originally, The Great Tower Of Pisa was built as a bell tower for the cathedral in Pisa. The leaning side of the tower stands at feet the high side of the tower stands at 186 feet. It took 344 years to build, beginning in August It began leaning in 1178 because one side start to sink into soft ground. The construction of the tower was held up twice, the first time for 100 years because of a war the second in 1284.

The people have suggested that the tower be straightened but the people of Pisa said they would rather see it fall as its the leaning tower of Pisa for a reason. In 2008 engineers stated that the tower had stopped moving. Since the tower was built not one person has been able to identify who the actual architect was.
