What is a tower? Name a famous tower. What is the purpose of a tower? What is the structure of a tower?

A tower is a tall structure, taller than it is wide.

Towers are specifically distinguished from 'buildings' in that they are not built to be habitable but to serve other functions.

The principal function is the use of their height to enable various functions to be achieved including:

visibility of other features attached to the tower such clock towers

Watts Towers

Watts Towers “fanciful spires pieced together over a period of thirty-three years from steel reinforcing rods and wire mesh, colorfully decorated with seashells and fragments of broken dishes and bottles” from Sylvia Hart Wright. Sourcebook of Contemporary North American Architecture: From Postwar to Postmodern. p111

Watts Towers are an example of Outsider Art. Outsiders Art is art created by: – Self-taught artists – Outside of the established art scene

I Build the Tower Full length film The story of Simon Rodia & the Watts Towers of Los Angeles

An 82-foot-tall tower made out of thousands of books — 30,000 such “bricks” to be precise? We can see book lovers’ eyes light up with glee in view of all the reading material, only to be extinguished by the thought of such a waste. But bookworms and environmentalists can relax and rejoice! Not a single volume was harmed in the process of building this massive structure.

The “Tower of Babel,” as it is officially called, was the brainchild of acclaimed Argentinean artist Marta Minujín. Minujín devised the tower in celebration of Buenos Aires being chosen as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) 2011 World Book Capital. The used raw materials were donated by libraries and readers eager to help, as well as more than 50 embassies.Marta Minujín
