Tie Dye T-Shirts

Day 1 Procedures 1.Label your shirt so you can tell it is yours! 2.Wear gloves! 3.Soak it in the bucket of sodium carbonate for 20 minutes. 4.Wring the excess liquid out of the fabric. 5.Fold, twist, scrunch & tie with binding materials the items to create the desired pattern. 6.Use plastic micropipettes to apply the dyes. 7.Once dyeing is complete, wrap the item in newspaper and place it in a plastic grocery bag. 8.Allow the dye to set for 24 hours.

Day 2 Procedures 1.Remove each item from its plastic bag and rinse in warm water. 2.Carefully cut the ties and rinse again. 3.Change the water & continue to rinse until the water remains clear. (Don’t do in plastic or fiberglass sink or it will stain) 4.Set the dye(s) by washing the items in a washing machine set on hot. Add 2 tablespoons of the pre-wash detergent such as Joy, Dawn, or Ivory. Wash no more than 10, like colored items together in the washing machine. 5.Dry the items in the dryer using the hot setting. 6.After the dye has been set, the fabric should be colorfast.
