Transition to Professional Practice T2P Anna Zuber and Christine Knight-Smith An opportunity to try something different, to enrich your experience and the skills that you offer as a teacher

Features of T2P “Design your own T2P” based on your goals Choose your geographic location 10 days to expand your experience and resume

What are the goals? To try an educational experience which is outside your teachable area(s) To work with a different age group or level of students To add skills and/or experience to your resume To develop a resource which will benefit an organization and will strengthen your organizational skills To use your teaching skills in a workplace outside of the classroom

Option A: Community Placement

Why choose a community placement? Become exposed to other career routes as an Educator Build meaningful community through on-the-job market connections Enhance your understanding of different cultures, communities, social issues Increase your sense of civic engagement and social responsibility

For example… Social agencies Non-profit organizations Community libraries Universities and Colleges Seniors’ facilities Museums Art galleries Hospitals and Health Care Facilities Note: Teacher Candidates with Early Years Specialization are required to do T2P placements in Early Years settings

Option B: School T2P placement

In-school ideas… Work with a different age or level of students Any department where you would like experience Examples include: Special Education Classes Guidance Departments School Libraries English as a Second Language Alternate or Adult Education Private Schools Early Years Classrooms

London District Catholic School Board LDCSB has requested a coordinated T2P IMPORTANT: Do not approach directly Submit T2P application requesting LDCSB, indicating what type of placement

Option C: International Community Service Learning

Option C: International CSL The Faculty of Education Partners with The Student Success Centre to offer 3 unique international experience: 1. Peru - Solidarity in Action 2. Germany & Poland - Amizade 3. Dominican Republic - Outreach 360

What is International CSL? A pedagogical approach you can use in your classrooms A form of International Education Service activities with specific learning outcomes Based on community-defined needs Cultural immersion Focus is service not travel Incorporates reflection to achieve deep learning Exposure to diverse communities and “ways of knowing”

Germany/Poland Experience Opportunity: Community Service Learning in Germany and Poland Community Partner: Amizade ( Duration of Experience: 10 days (Tuesday, May 5 th - Friday, May 15 th, 2015) Current Focus: Holocaust Remembrance and Preservation Number of Opportunities: Minimum of 10, Maximum of 19 (includes Student Team Leader) + 1 Faculty Team Leader Features of Trip: Visits to historic sites in Germany and Poland – service work with Auschwitz Museum Cost: $3330

Peru Opportunity: Community Service Learning in Peru Community Partner: Solidarity in Action ( Duration of Experience: 13 days (Friday, May 1 st – Wednesday, May 13 th ) Current Focus: Education Number of Opportunities: Minimum of 9, Maximum of 24 Teacher Candidates + 1 Faculty Team Leader Features of this Trip: Candidates support local community partners through teaching, lesson planning and curriculum design. The 13-day program includes a visit to Machu Picchu. Cost: $3100

Dominican Republic Opportunity: Community Service Learning in Dominican Republic Community Partner: Outreach 360 Duration of Experience: 7 days (Saturday, May 2 nd – Saturday, May 9 th ) Current Focus: Education Number of Opportunities: Minimum of 10, Maximum of 19 Teacher Candidates + 1 Faculty Team Leader Features of this Trip: Facilitating educational programming for youth of all ages, including pre-school education, English education, and literacy education at neighbourhood centres and Outreach 360 Learning Sites. Cost: $1715

Is International CSL Right for You? Be prepared to work and learn, travel and tourism are secondary features Prepare to work HARD A group activity, highly integrated “Humble” (yet clean, comfortable) accommodations, ground transport for true immersion Often creates more questions than answers

How to Get Involved Information Sessions at 12:30pm and 1:30pm on Tuesday, November 25 in Rm Applications “go live” on Monday, Nov 24 – link on the blog, due by December 11 with $200 non-refundable deposit. Successful applications based on depth of answers, not first come first served. December 19 – Confirmations to Successful Applicants 2 Mandatory Pre-Departure Sessions in Winter

Option D: French Exchange Typically available to Teacher Candidates enrolled in a French program (PJ, JI, or IS) Students from France are completing their practicum placements here in London now Western teacher candidates visit France in May (4 weeks) Information will be presented in French courses

Showcase Finale – May 15th Displays of T2P placement – opportunity to “showcase” the organization or school where you completed your T2P Final assembly - music, international T2P presentations and more Informal celebration, chance to say “good-bye” Complimentary Pizza party Celebrate the many successes of the year!

T2P Application process Submit your proposal online (link from the blog) The registration form requires: – the type of T2P experience you choose (one of the 3options- Community placement, School placement, International Service Learning (includes French exchange) – what you plan to do and where you plan to do it – contact information for your “community partner” – Name and contact information of your Supervisor – At least 3 goals/objectives You will be informed by once your proposal has been approved.

Application Timeline November 21 – General Information Session November 24 – Application system “live” November 25 – Information Sessions for International Opportunities (12:30 & 1:30 pm) room 1162 December 11 – International Service Learning applications due with non- refundable deposit (submit to Teacher Education Office) December 19 – Confirmations to International Service Learning applicants February 20 th – T2P proposals due (final fees due for international participants)
