Do Now: Name the two steps in Freytag’s Pyramid that are missing above. Explain the significance of the “super-suit”; what is the author/illustrator trying to convey with that image?

Pre-Assessment Part II Essay Writing What does a well-constructed and engaging essay look like? It needs a hook to engage the reader, e.g., a quote from the text, a rhetorical question or statement, or an idea contrasting from the thesis. It needs a thesis that presents the claim (i.e. your argument), along with a brief mention of supporting details to be discussed in the paper. It needs a body that is organized throughout; usually this is general-to-specific (arguments and evidence) but may be organized differently.

Pre-Assessment Part II It needs evidence in the form of cited quotes, summaries, or paraphrases of the text that appropriately support your thesis. It needs to flow smoothly from one idea to the next with confident, objective voice and varied, stimulating sentence structure. It needs to build to a conclusion that successfully synthesizes your arguments and evidence, reconnecting with the thesis and expanding on it. Avoid fragments, run-ons, subject-verb disagreement, shifts in verb tense, non-sequiturs, and 1st and 2nd person pronouns unless quoting directly from the text.

Pre-Assessment Part II (Hon.Eng. III) Construct a well-designed and engaging essay completely answering one of the following prompts using evidence from the text:  What is the effect of the story's being presented (except for two instances near the novel's end) through the mind and voice of Grant Wiggins? Several of the McBride children became involved in the civil rights movement. Do you think that this was a result of the times in which they lived, their need to belong to a group that lent them a solid identity, or a combination of these and other factors?
