What are Human Rights (HR)? HR: The rights you have simply because you are human. Human rights are based on the principle of respect for the individual. Their fundamental assumption is that each person is a moral and rational being who deserves to be treated with dignity. They are called human rights because they are universal. Whereas nations or specialized groups enjoy specific rights that apply only to them, human rights are the rights to which everyone is entitled—no matter who they are or where they live—simply because they are alive. (The United for Human Rights) See:

NAME : Lech Wałęsa Date of birth : 29th Sept Place of birth: Popowo / Poland Occupation: – electrician in Gdańsk Shipyard – President of Poland Prize(s) : 1983 The Nobel Peace Prize 1989 Liberty Prize, Philadeplhia Libery Prize Contribution to securing Human Rights : Polish politician, trade union organiser, human rights activist. He was the cofounder of „Solidarity”- the first independent trade union. He was arrested several times but he continued his activisn against communist system. In August 1980 he was instrumental in political negotiations that led to the ground-breaking Gdańsk Agreement between striking workers and the government. Wałęsa was prominent in the establishment of the 1989 Round Table Agreement that led to semi-free parliamentary elections in June 1989 and to a Solidarity-led government. In the Polish election of 1990, he successfully ran for the newly re-established office of President of Poland. He presided over Poland's transformation from a communist to a post- communist state Bestowing Lech Walesa with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983 was a significant expression of support of the international community for the Solidarity movement. It was an event which was one of the milestones on the Poland's way to freedom and independence. The Nobel Prize awarded to the leader of Solidarity movement was important for the victory over communism and support for the spirit of struggle against the totalitarian regime. Polish society, broken by the introduction of a martial law, took it as a sign of hope and support. References :
