Multiplication and Division

Steps 1) Multiply 2) Count place values 3) Move the decimal left that number of spaces.

Example: 2.05 x Five place values, so move the decimal five places left. Add necessary zeros.

Division

F.I.T. The First number using ÷ is the same as the Inside number when using the house and the same as the Top number when using the fraction bar.

Decimal Division 1) Move the decimal by the “house” if it’s not already there. 2) Match the move inside the “house” 3) The decimal in the answer is straight above the decimal inside the house. 4) Divide normally.

Example: 80.6 ÷ 2.56 Move each decimal 2 places.

Example: 3.5 ÷ 5 There is no need to move the decimal because the decimal in the five is after the five and next to the house.

Add Zeros Add as many zeros as you need. Round the answer to the desired accuracy. 1.3 ÷ 0.07

Example: 1.3 ÷ 0.07 Round the answer to the nearest hundredth. To get an answer rounded to the nearest hundredth, you will work the problem to the thousandth place to know if you should round up or not.
