The Declaration of Independence was written in response to King George III’s refusal to accept this petition, written by the Continental Congress.

What was the Olive Branch Petition?

The 1 st part of the Declaration of Independence is called this, explaining why the Continental Congress wrote it.

What is a preamble, or introduction?

This part of the Declaration of Independence defines the natural rights of humans, consent of the governed, and governments duty to protect citizens’ rights.

What is the 2 nd part, or Declaration of Natural Rights?

This part of the Declaration of Independence numerates the repeated injuries and unjust treatment committed by the king.

What is the 3 rd part, or List of Grievances?

This part of the Declaration of Independence declares the British colonies as free, independent and united states of America.
