MV STRATEGIC PLANNING PLANNING FOR PHASE III Should we have 3 architects submit proposals?
Our Mission: To Plan Phase III n Deadline: November 1, 2004 n Course of action: Four meetings will be convened between now and then for discussions. distribution of Powerpoint will allow the entire campus to evaluate and add their input. n any ideas for discussion to:
Categories of Space n Classroom n Laboratory :>( Load ratio too high, we may be able to reuse some areas in existing buildings for this. n Office n Library n Audio/Visual/TV n Storage? In Basement?
Final Project Proposal n Must be submitted by July 1, n Final is the key word. No changes will be made after that point without losing our place in line. n We must be clear on what we want!
CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLE: SIMPLE TO MAINTAIN/CLEAN n Simple light controls n Painted walls --- Simple color scheme Navajo White (easy to match)Navajo White (easy to match) Teale Green TrimTeale Green Trim Semi-gloss for easy clean-upSemi-gloss for easy clean-up n Linoleum or painted concrete flooring n Sound barriers between rooms.
CONSTRUCTION PRINCIPLE: Energy Efficient n Passive Solar Cooling Casement or other operable windowsCasement or other operable windows Wing walls on windward side of buildingWing walls on windward side of building Thermal chimneyThermal chimney n Daylighting where possible. Clerestory windows on north-facing rooms. n See US Department of Energy Website n Solar Panels?
All Classrooms should have: n Adequate Sized White Boards! n Projector Screens on the corner of the room so they don’t block the white boards. n Light sectioned to allow the lights over the screen to be turned off separate from the room lights. Incandescent? n Instructional Console/ Recessed Instructional Equipment Security Area for equipment. n Emergency button: campus safety security n Cabling installed for phone/internet.
Lecture sq. ft n Large Lecture Hall (1800 sq. ft) n 5 Lecture Room(s) (675 sq. ft) 45 student ( LARGE WHITE BOARD!!!) n PA program lecture room 60 capacity, with 2 neighboring 30 students rooms that can be partitioned in half: 1800ft 2 n 1 Lecture Room for 21 students
Room complex: suitable for the PA program partition
Large Lecture Hall (1800 SQ.FT) n 118 student capacity plus 2 seats that accommodate students with disabilities. n Lectern along the long dimension of the room. Sloped flooring. Center aisle. n *Students at long “bench style” table as in Physics 2000 at UCR? Larger desk? n Technology as in the “Smart Room”. n Storage cabinets for demonstration materials, posters, permanent white boards that slide up, etc.
Large Lecture Hall - Proposal Instructor area Projectionscreen 7 students DSPS Hall or exterior of building
Large Lecture Hall n Fixed benches, but movable chairs/swiveling? to accommodate different size students. Terraced seating area/ramped. Simple chairs are less expensive. n Built in wall/flat screens. Cost? Maintainance? n Technology consultant. What does the future look like? n Option: Flat room, with elevated stage for professor.
Large Lecture n Good Visibility for student-professor eye contact, audio-visual. n Good acoustics. n Science: sink, electric, bench for demonstrations.
Office 4000 sq ft. n Administrative? n Faculty? n How much square footage is allowed? n Faculty workroom?
Library-3800 sq.ft n Used for Reading/Writing purposes? n Collaboration with CIS for technological/digital library which would multipurpose as a computer work area for CIS students? n Bridge from Phase III to current Library
AVTV- 800 sq.ft
Other -17,000 sq.ft n Cafeteria n Storage- Basement? n External ramps for wheelchairs. n Students activities with sound directed toward the end of the library. n Smaller West facing windows (with awnings?) to reduce heating.
Cafeteria- 10,000 SQ.FT? n Multipurpose room n Folding tables for eating n Small Stage for functions n Folding Bleachers n Divided food service area with access to covered patio (overlooking Jaeger), so a function can take place in the main dining room leaving a smaller food service area for students.
Data Needed? n What is the square footage of the RIV cafeteria? n McDermott Hall? n Digital Library Auditorium? n Cafeteria Kitchen area? Food Storage space?
Other Considerations? n Locking storage cabinets for instructor use (as in science labs) rather than so many carts. Computer underneath desk in front, LCD. n BIG whiteboards!!!
PLANNING LECTURE ROOMS n How many students are optimum for your courses? What size rooms? n How should they be configured to optimize student/faculty interactions? n What type of furniture? n What type of AV and technology?
When are the meetings? n Friday, Sept. 10 from 1 pm to 3 pm. n Thursday, Sept. 23 from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm in Sci 261. n Friday, Oct. 8 from 1 pm to 3 pm in Hum 129. n Thursday, Oct. 21 from 1 pm to 3 pm in Sci 261.
Learning about LOAD RATIOS n What are “the rules” that limit what we can incorporate into Phase III? Square footage per studentSquare footage per student Lecture (15 ft 2 /student)Lecture (15 ft 2 /student) Lab (50 ft 2 /student)Lab (50 ft 2 /student) Percentage for instructional spacePercentage for instructional space n What funding sources can be applied to for funds to retrofit the existing buildings?
Web Site- Facilities Planning Manual n ties/refs/fac_pln_mnl.htm
Terms/Abbreviations on Capacity n WSCH = weekly student contact hours n ASF = assignable square feet n Capacity = the amount of enrollment that can be accommodated by an amount of space. n Space Standards – a number of ASF per 100 WSCH.
