Howard Gardner

Born July 11, 1943 Developmental Psychologist Harvard University Professor Theory of ‘Multiple Intelligences’ (1999)

Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences Criticized IQ test  Focused on language, math/science skills Intelligence:  “an ability to solve a problem or fashion a product that is valued in at least one culture or community” Emphasized complexity of individual differences & abilities Students learn most successfully when:  When given opportunities to use their unique talents to process information

How do you learn? DO NOW:

Multiple Intelligences Verbal Linguistic  Ability to learn by responding to words.  Learn well through expressive language.  Likely to enjoy reading, writing, and speaking. Logical/Mathematical  Recognize symbols and patterns and understand their relationships.  Good with numbers, reasoning, logic, problem solving, patterns, and abstract thinking. Musical  Perceive, remember, and express themselves through sound, rhythm, and pitch.  Use music as a means of expression and as an avenue for processing information.

Multiple Intelligences (cont.) Visual/Spatial  Think best through visual perceptions and mental representations.  Create mental pictures and 3D concepts to help them understand.  Keenly aware of shapes, maps, charts, tables, graphs and puzzles. Bodily/Kinesthetic  Use movement as a way of understanding.  Associate thought with motion and need to move to know, often moving objects around to understand concepts.  Prefer a hands-on approach, participating rather than watching.

Multiple Intelligences (cont.) Interpersonal  Use their awareness of other people as a basis for action.  Get along well with others and are sensitive to what they think/feel.  Openly exchange thoughts with others and participate in group activities. Intrapersonal  Use an awareness of their own thoughts and feelings to guide their behavior.  Don’t need others to affirm their ideas or encourage them.  Intuitive, self-motivated, and content to be by themselves. Naturalist  Recognize patterns in the world, especially the way plants grow and animals behave.  Understand details of the environment and are in tune with the natural cycles of nature.
