DIVIDING ETHNICITIES By: Ariyana Huguley Kennedy Toney Tara Dougherty

 Live in the Caucasus  Sunni Muslims speak the language of the Iranian group of the Indo- Iranian branch of Indo-European  Sunni Muslims have distinctive literature, dress, and other cultural traditions  Kurds used to live in Kurdistan in the 1920s KURDS  Today they live in a 25 mile spilt between 6 countries.  15m miles in east Turkey  5 mile in west Iran  4 mile in north Iraq  Smaller number in United America  Kurds 1/5 population in Iraq  Kurds 1/6 population in Turkey  Kurds 1/10 population in Iran

 Provides a distinct example of what happens when independence begins in a colony with 2 major ethnicities  Muslims and Hindus have fought for control of territory especially in south Asia  Around 1000 A.D. Mahmud led raids on the Punjab area of northern India SOUTH ASIA

SOUTH ASIA FORCED MIGRATION  Approximately 17 million Muslims migrated from India to east Pakistan  Including Hindus to India  6 million from west Pakistan  3.5 million from east Pakistan  many Hindus in Pakistan's were killed trying to reach the border by a rival religion  Many Muslims in India were killed trying to reach the border by a rival religion  Extremists attacked smaller groups on roads and passengers on trains

SOUTH ASIA ETHNIC DISPUTES  Pakistan and India didn’t agree on where the boundary separating the 2 countries in Kashmir  In 1972 the 2 countries maintained a ‘line of control’  Pakistan administrating the northwestern portion  India administrating the southeastern  Sikhs believe they weren't given their own independence country when India was separated  Sikhs are only 2% of the population  Sikhs are the majority in the Indian state of Punjab  Sikh fight mainly for control over Punjab and complete independence from India

 Sri Lanka is torn by the fighting between the Sinhalese and the Tamils.  The fighting began in  Between the 2 ethnicities, 60,000 have died from the fighting. SRI LANKA FORMERLY KNOW AS CEYLON  The 2 ethnicities have been fighting for over 2000 years.  Out of the 300 out of the 2000 years the fighting has cooled down due to European rule.  Their independence in 1984

 Take up 4% of population  Migrated from northern India in the 15 th century B.C.  Occupy the southern portion of Sri Lanka SINHALESE  300 years later the converted to Buddhism  They are apart of an Indo- European language in the Indo- Iranian branch  Dominate the military government and most of commerce

 Take 18% of the population  Migrated from India beginning in the 3 rd century B.C  Occupy northern portion of Sri Lanka  Tamils assassinated the Sinhalese president in 1993  And their successor in 1999 TAMILS  They are Hindus who speak the Tamil language in the Dravidian language group  Tamil language is also spoken by 70 million people in India  Tamil feel discriminated with Sinhalese dominating the government
