Welcome to Computer Applications Class! Teacher: Ellen Cole

Welcome to Open House I have heard wonderful things about your children and I am looking forward to working with my students throughout the year. You can contact me by or by phone:

Curriculum All grade levels are learning to keyboard. Students are expected to use proper posture and technique while keying text at a speed appropriate to the grade level and level of experience. Goals Minimum: 90% accuracy  6 th grade: 20 Words Per Minute  7 th & 8th th grade: 30 WPM  High School: 45 WPM  College: WPM

Curriculum Students will also learn to use applications that will be key to success in education, in business and in day-to-day life. We have upgraded to Office 2007, but will learn to save as  Word - word processing to create and edit documents  PowerPoint - create presentations  Excel - spreadsheet application used for simple computations and for organizing and sorting data  Publisher - desktop publishing used to create a variety of printed media  Paint – students learn to use a basic drawing program.

Curriculum Hardware and software  Network drives - students will work with a variety of drives and learn to use and organize files for a variety of purposes  Digital Cameras - Students will plan and take photos that will be edited and used in other applications.  Local and Network printers - students will use printers as appropriate to each project.

Curriculum Text On the 6 th grade page, there is a link to Typing Master Online, where your child has a year-long subscription. I hope that your child will continue to practice typing and to improve his/her skills throughout the year.

Curriculum Text 7 th and 8 th graders:  Keyboarding is practiced using a network program called TypeTime.  Students will use EasyTech, an on-line service to complete tutorials pertaining to applications being learned in class.  Projects will be assigned in class to apply skills learned on EasyTech. These will be accessed from my website:

Websites My website can be accessed through the Whittier site which is accessed through the Norman Public Schools site. Or go to the site directly: EasyTech: 7 th and 8 th grade students will have a username and password assigned to them in class, but the site and lessons can be accessed from home if a student needs to complete work outside of class. Typing tests will be administered in class using Students can access this site from home to practice timed typing skills. Scholastic Book Orders Several times throughout the year, I will offer my students the opportunity to order software and books from the Scholastic Company. Order forms will be available in the lab and students are encouraged to pay by check written out to Scholastic Book Clubs You can also order and pay by credit card on-line! There will be a link on the home page of my website that will take you to an information page with a link and the passwords to Scholastic.com Whether you order from me or on-line, the books and software will be delivered here at Whittier and I will get it to your student ASAP.
