MR105 – Keyboarding I Week 3 Seminar Raquel S. Cummings, Instructor

Agenda Week Two Grading Week Three Learning Outcomes By the way…don’t forget to post on the Discussion Board this week. Active Exercises P re-Test, P ractice, P ost-Test Ergonomic tip…keyboard tray Sneak Peek at Week Four Questions

Week Two Grading I am working diligently on Week Two grading. With the grading, I can see improvement with many from week to week. What do you think about your progress? How can I gain points?

Progress so far How are you progressing so far in this class? Please type “Happy”, “So-So” or “Unhappy” to indicate how you feel about your typing. Next, regardless of your answer, list your strength and weakness. Example: Strength: numbers Weakness: Chocolate…I mean keeping fingers on home row.

Timed Typings Problems When I see timed typing attempts that are not the best, I immediately look for: Incorrect text Incorrect lesson accessed in GDP Other possible reasons: Fatigue Rushing to get done on time Wanting to stay ahead

Gaining Points Two ways to gain points in this class… Seminar Participation Discussion Board Posts

Discussion Board Always post at least meet the minimum requirements: Initial post by Saturday at 11:59 pm. Two posts, on two separate days, posted to two different classmates by Tuesday at 11:59 pm. Responses have to help further the discussion.

Seminar To help earn the maximum points in Seminar, Option 1…comment, ask questions, answer questions. We are in seminar for at least one hour, sometimes a bit more. :o) We have to continually comment, ask questions, and answer questions to keep the discussion going, and to help keep you engaged in the seminar. Adding value to the discussion is important. Remember, if you are experiencing severe interconnectivity issues, it is best to close out seminar and complete Option 2.

Week Three Learning Outcomes In Week Three you will: Apply correct typing techniques Numbers, Shift Key, and more alphabet practice Operate by touch the number keys using the correct finger/key correlation Home Row Reaching Basic Ergonomics

Assignments for Grades Seminar Timed Typing Lesson 15, Exercise G page 51. Complete at least two attempts for grading. Discussion Question

Discussion Board again this week! Don’t forget to post to the Discussion Board this week! Great way to interact with classmates, and learn new information.

Ergonomics and keyboarding Let’s have a quick quiz… without looking at your text: 1. True or False: Straighten your fingers when reaching for the number keys. 2. True or False: You type the 9 key by using the same finger as the K key. 3. True or False: Move your hands to Row 3 on the keyboard when keying numbers. Please type your answers now.

Ergonomics and keyboarding Answers: 1. True or False: Straighten your fingers when reaching for the number keys. FALSE 2. True or False: You type the 9 key by using the same finger as the K key. FALSE 3. True or False: Move your hands to Row 3 on the keyboard when keying numbers. FALSE How did you do? Really, these seem like easy answers, but these questions represent typing techniques that slows a person down when typing, and can lead to errors.

Ergonomic tip: Need a keyboard tray If you cannot change the surface that your computer sets on…can’t purchase a new desk, or change surfaces, try a keyboard tray. How many have a keyboard tray? Do they seem to help?

Technique Evaluation Form Useful tool to use so that someone can observe and evaluate your technique. If you get the chance, take a look at it and give it a try :o)

Basic Keyboarding Questions? What does WPM mean? How should your wrist be positioned when typing? When you are typing how should those fingers be positioned?

Basic Keyboarding Answers WPM – Stands for Word per Minute. Measure of time for your timed writings. Keeping your wrist low but not resting on the keyboard is the correct way to position your hands. This also prevents further injury. Your fingers should be curved a bit when you are typing.

Other Basic Keyboarding Information Symbols are common when it comes to typing. These symbols can mean so much in your everyday life. Example: = at, + = Add, - = Subtraction In the future pay close attention to what these can mean.

Important Things to Remember Always be sure to keep your eyes on your book or paper, this can help when you want to increase your speed. What is your experience with being able to complete your typing lessons while keeping your eyes on the book? If you have not experienced this yet, what do you think the outcome will be in your case? Remember, not everyone is on the same level. This is why it is good to dialog about it.

Quick Quiz??? What does it mean to word Wrap? What are some good uses of the TAB Key?

Quiz Answers… Word Wrap happens when you continue to type a sentence and it automatically moves the words to the next line without hitting the “enter” key. What are your thoughts about Word Wraps as a whole? Tab Key Example: Indent Are there other ways to indent a paragraph? Even if it is simple.

Have you Ever??? Have you ever experienced a problem with a bill because of a number that was typed or entered incorrectly?? Ex: Received a bill for more than expected.

Quick exercise #1 Zero’s or Oh? Please point out times when the symbols for zero and capital O can be mistaken for each other. (Please provide at least 4 sentences)

Quick exercise #2 When is it best to say zero rather than oh? (For instance, say zero when pronouncing the catalog number of a book to a librarian or when pronouncing the item number of a catalog purchase to a company representative.) Please provide at least 4 complete sentences.

In your opinion, what is good posture, and give me 5 examples. Do you have good posture? Come on tell the truth :o) ((lol)). What can you do to change that? Importance of Good Posture

Some things you can do! Center the body opposite the keyboard. Lean forward slightly for the hips. Keep feet flat on the floor. Keep elbows alongside the body. Curve fingers naturally over the home position. Your fingers should not straighten as you reach for the number keys. They must be curved.

Additional Practice As a Class Please open your GDP Software: Go into your GDP Please complete the Lesson 15C page 52. These are 12 second sprints. (4 lines) It will have you to type each line 3 times for 12 seconds. It goes pretty fast.

Skillbuilding: PPP (Pretest / Practice/ Posttest) The Pretest/Practice/Postest (PPP) is designed to build speed and accuracy through a three-step program. The purpose of the Pretest is to evaluate speed and accuracy for vertical reaches.

PPP (Pre, Practice, Post – Test) Discussion What is your personal idea of a Pretest, practice and posttest? Do you feel that they are beneficial for a class such as this? Answer and give me some examples. Answer in complete sentences and respond to at least three students.

Week Four In Week Four you will continue with practicing correct typing technique. You will also begin working on touch typing the symbol keys. Shift+key In Seminar, we will talk about what occupational requirements there are for your career choice, and the outlook for that career.

Questions? Any questions? Feel free to stay on with me in seminar, or shoot me an o) See you next week! Don’t forget your Discussion Question – post by Saturday.
