U.S. Dept. of Education Cheryl Keenan Director Adult Ed. And Literacy  Three factors changing for future educational success. How are the applicable to students? How do we train teachers? How do we test students?

U.S. Dept. of Education Adult Ed. students’ lack of time to earn credentials. ○ Move along continual pathways while condensing and streamlining goals to make more achievable. ○ Developing “Career Pathways” Partnering with Dept. of Labor, Workforce agencies Bridge Models Concurrent Models Growing sectors and areas that have value in the market place.

U.S. Dept of Labor Grace Kilbane - Employment and Training Administration  Concerns facing D.O.L. Unemployment ○ 14 million unemployed ○ Youth unemployment 25% higher than ○ 15% lack a high school diploma ○ Half have nothing earned past a high school diploma ○ Employers want other education and credentials beyond high school and GED.

U.S. Dept. of Labor cont:  Youth dropout: Integrating employment with training. Credentials! Linking up training with credentials that count. Myskillsmyfuture.org site for job seekers and information for what skills are needed for different types of employment. Workforce Innovation Fund- competitive grants and services- fall time launch.

GED PROGRESS:  New partnership between GED Testing Service and Pearson Vue.  By 2014, GED will be administered electronically.  Fees will be increasing in each jurisdiction. $24.oo per battery or $ Subject to change.

GED Cont:  Some changes to GED exam:  By 2014, exam will follow the Common Core Standards and computer lab setting computer skills required.  Students will know their scores (minus Writing) upon exiting the exam.  S.S. essay to be added to the exam.  Essay to be eventually scored by the computer.  Revised accommodations for students.

“Survey Says”

A.C.E Study  307 out of 1,000 G.E.D. recipients enrolled in postsecondary education five years later.  77 dropped out after one semester.  17 completed a degree or certificate.

A.C.E study  43% G.E.D. recipients enroll in certificate or college programs within six years.  Compared with 20% of those who do not pass the test and 64% of high school graduates.  Few complete more than a year of coursework.

A.C.E study cont:  Why? What would bring them back?  Lack of supports  College too difficult  Too expensive  Lack of certain skills to be successful  Negative life experiences that interfere  Lack of confidence as a postsecondary student

GEDTS Assistance will:  Create professional development modules that guide instructors through the new content.  Help instructors adapt a “quasi-counseling role” which can help students see the exam as a step towards postsecondary education.  Set up an approval process for curriculum developed to reflect the new GED. The GED website will be used as a “hub” housing GED resources.
