The Design Process Innovation Academy Smarter Energy with Ms. Mills Monday Design Challenge

EMPATHIZE Partner Interview Time What are examples of alternative fuels? Why are alternative fuels unpredictable? Why would it be important to have a different plan for alternative fuels?

DEFINE How might we better deal with the unpredictable nature of alternative fuels?

IDEATE Brainstorming Rules: Defer judgement Go for volume One conversation at a time Be visual Headline Headline Headline Build on the ideas of others Build on the ideas of others Stay on topic Stay on topic Encourage WILD IDEAS Encourage WILD IDEAS Headline

PROTOTYPE Start rough and rapid You will have 10 minutes to build before the 1st round of FEEDBACK

TEST Go back to the student you interviewed FEEDBACK is the key - I like... I would maybe change...

Prototype Share-out 1. What is the alternative fuel that you are dealing with? 2. How does your design deal with the unpredictable nature of alternative fuels? 3. How can the energy be collected? 4. What is the BEST feature of your design? 5. If you had more time, what would you add/change, etc?

Overall Challenge Reflection What did you learn today? How did the design process help create innovative thinking? What did you think about the design challenge today? If you had more time what would you do to your design? Blogs.svvsd.org/innovationacademy/

Math Inquiry Question: How can different states and communities generate and use alternative energy specific to their available natural resources? Compare the number of sunny days in Colorado to a different state. Find the average, median and mode of the cities “sunny days” of that specific state. Graph the “sunny days” to make a visual representation. Example Websites to use: resources/net-metering-statehttp:// resources/net-metering-state

Math Inquiry Question: How can different states and communities generate and use alternative energy specific to their available natural resources? Compare the number of days in Colorado and surrounding states when wind or solar energy can be gathered. The students will calculate the average, median, mode and mean of the data. They will graph their data collection. Example Websites to use: resources/net-metering-statehttp:// resources/net-metering-state
