Gr. 2 News Claire Cox OCTOBER 2007 Curriculum News: MATH At present we are completing Unit 6 : ‘Whole-Number Operations and Number Stories’ and working towards being able to answer these questions: Can I :- add three one digit numbers in my head? -add and subtract two digit numbers? -use addition or subtraction number models to answer a story problem? Soon we will be beginning Journal 2 and studying Unit 7: ‘Patterns and Rules’ - with these questions – Can I:- measure to the nearest inch or centimeter? – add and subtract groups of twos, fives, and tens in patterns? – find the missing number, no matter where it is, in a number model? – make and read a bar graph? Dear Parents, The weeks seem to be flying by since 2008 began! and I look forward to a lovely uninterrupted six weeks of teaching and learning before Spring break in March. Thank you all for your help, and for the contributions of food for our Chinese New Year grade 2 celebration. What a wonderful shared lunch we all enjoyed! We are all feeling so saddened that the C.N.Y. holiday became such a sad time for the Wittry family and I know everyone will want to give what support we can this semester. I hope to see many of you at some of the events listed below. Regards, Claire Cox. Feb/Mar dates to remember: Feb 18 th Author’s visit. Feb 28 h Field Day 11:55-2:15 Mar th Jim Valley at T.A.S. Mar 06 th Kite making morning Mar st Student-Led Portfolio Conferences. Mar26-Apl 07 th PD Days and Spring Break SCIENCE: Our current study is ‘Air and Weather’ covering these four investigations: Exploring Air Observing Weather Wind Explorations Looking for Change The Foss Kit we use provides many opportunities for hands on experiments, and a kite making morning!! will be part of this study. Many helpers will be needed!!– details will follow nearer the time. Writers’ and Readers’ Workshop – We are writing and reading a mixture of non-fiction and fiction and particularly looking at the features of non-fiction. It is wonderful to see writing being the favorite time of the day for the children, and also to see the children reading avidly and usually independently choosing a variety of just right reading material now.
