Network functions are fully defined by SW, minimising dependence on HW constraints DPI BRAS GGSN/ SGSN Firewall CG-NAT PE Router VIRTUAL NETWORK FUNCTIONS COMMON HW (Servers & Switches) FUNCTION CAPACITY The NFV Concept

(Much) More than an Implementation Technique Not simply bringing network functions to (current) clouds or an extension to SDN The kind of workloads that NFV implies is completely different to the ones considered in the current cloud practice  Evidence suggests the need of applying techniques related to high-performance computing, like NUMA The network has a shape  VNFs need to be place and managed according to a global network view  And seamlessly across different (kinds of) datacenters NFV deal with networks at two layers  The supporting infrastructure already present in the current clouds,  The upper network service layer provided by composing VNFs  The relationship between NFV and SDN at both layers needs to be explored NFV implies a redefinition of the roles involved in network service provisioning

The New Roles - XaaS for Network Services IaaSNaaS SaaS NFVIaaS Hosting Service Provider VNF VNF Tenants NSP VNF VNF Forwarding Graph Admin User Admin User VNFaaS User PaaS VNPaaS NFVI Provider

Counting a Few Design patterns  Componentization  Infrastructure and service function description and programming  System wide optimization of compute, storage, network and energy efficiency  Infrastructure and service abstractions enabled by virtualization  Transition strategies and support for heterogeneous infrastructures Orchestration  Service chaining automation  Autonomous orchestration  Big data in the loop  Seize the opportunity to simplify systems and processes Interstitial security threats  Topologies  Trusted boot  Several identity layers and accounting Virtualized network economics and business modeling

What Comes Next Gain critical mass to consolidate the NFVRG proposal  We hope this meeting will be a solid step towards it Define the expected output(s) of the group  Beyond becoming a forum for exchanging experiences on applied research connected to NFV open issues  A (set of) document(s) describing the IRTF view(s) and/or contributions to NFV Engage with the NFV community at large  Bi-directional relationship with the NFV ISG at ETSI Seek for alignment with their research agenda  NFV-related groups in IETF  Academia ... Have fun and be goode
