PROFESSIONAL ADAPTABLE INDISPENSABLE INVENTIVE CREATIVE Engineering the Future: working together to enhance understanding, commitment and participation in engineering Engineering requires the application of science to enable the transmission of data across large distances as efficiently as possible. In modern telecommunications the use of LEDs (light emitting diodes), fibre optics and optoelectronic devices play a key role in transmitting data. Engineering has provided solutions for sending data over the internet, and via satellite communication systems and remote control devices. Engineers determined the most suitable method for each application taking into account the quality of the received signal and the relative cost of each solution. This project illustrates the application of some simple electronic devices to the transmission of optical signals and links to key concepts within the Standard Grade Physics and other courses. Pupils carry out investigations in which they identify the factors which affect the transfer of light energy from a LED to a photodiode. Using the following: coloured LEDs, Photodiode, Signal generators, Cathode Ray Oscilloscopes (CRO), Coloured filters, fibre optic cable and Concave mirrors; they then design a simple system to optimise the output signal. By participating fully in the investigations and problem solving activities, pupils will be able to use a signal generator and a CRO. practice use of electronic equipment and find its limitations. solve the problem of loss of signal strength with distance. solve the problem of signal quality. consider the factors which may affect the transfer of light from an LED to a photodiode. prepare fibre optic cable and possibly join two lengths together. find the focal point of a concave mirror. develop skills of collaboration and perseverance, essential for the role of the engineer. Why Engineering? This lesson was different – use of optical fibre – and practical work meant they understood it better. Engineering the Future aims to develop a sustainable model of activities that enhance the learning experiences of pupils, develops their knowledge and understanding of contemporary engineering and smoothes the transition into engineering from school to university.
