OpenStand Principles for the modern paradigm for standards development

How it Started On August 29, 2012, IAB, IEEE, IETF, ISOC and W3C agreed to affirm and uphold a set of established, time-tested principles that have helped drive the innovation of the last two decades. The “OpenStand” Principles The “OpenStand” Principles were formally drafted and jointly affirmed, not just to align these organizations, but to mobilize ongoing global support for the application of these market- driven principles in technology and standards development. On August 29, 2012, IAB, IEEE, IETF, ISOC and W3C agreed to affirm and uphold a set of established, time-tested principles that have helped drive the innovation of the last two decades. The “OpenStand” Principles The “OpenStand” Principles were formally drafted and jointly affirmed, not just to align these organizations, but to mobilize ongoing global support for the application of these market- driven principles in technology and standards development.

OpenStand: Five Core Principles Respectful cooperation between standards organizations Whereby each respects the autonomy, integrity, processes and intellectual property rules of the others 1 Adherence to the fundamental parameters of standards development Including due process, broad consensus, transparency, balance and universal openness 2 Collective empowerment to strive to develop standards that are chosen & defined based on technical merit As judged by the contributed expertise of an open and global experts community Provide global interoperability, scalability, stability, and resiliency Enable global competition Serve as building blocks for further innovation Contribute to the creation of benefit for humanity 3 Availability of standards specifications Made globally accessible to all for implementation & deployment Defined procedures to develop specifications that can be implemented under fair terms Ensuring a broad affordability of the outcome of the standardization process (openness of input & output) 4 Voluntary adoption by the standards market The success of a standard is determined by the market. 5 Reference:

OpenStand Principles Support Global, Market-Driven Standards Development The economics of global markets and societal needs, fueled by technological innovation, drive global deployment of standards that are built in a consensual manner, from the bottom-up. These standards help ensure strong integration, interoperability, and increased synergies along the innovation chain across national and regional boundaries.

OpenStand Principles Establish a paradigm, not just a set of values Produce standards through a process that is open to an inclusive society of world experts. Leverage and build upon knowledge to drive innovation.

OpenStand Principles Fuel strategy, business development and innovation Standards produced within the modern standards paradigm support:  Collaboration & Consensus  Relationship Building  Business & Technology Development  New & Existing Markets

OpenStand Principles Embrace and support collaborative communities Sharing the values of openness, transparency and inclusiveness Supporting coordination and collaboration among standards development organizations to: Eliminate duplicate efforts that may be shouldered by industry Simplify the international standards development landscape Make standards development more affordable for all stakeholders Foster local economic growth and development
