Presentation transcript:

How do you build a smart city? I’m going to talk about: How standards provide cheaper, faster and less risky ways for cities to become smarter ….. ….. standards are the building blocks of smart cities! And how you can help set the global standards for smart cities ………and, by doing so, open up much greater opportunities for your business.

City Building Blocks And I invite you to get involved! Dubai is a member of the City Protocol Society – a global community of cities that have agreed to develop and implement common city solutions. I will invite you to: Join the City Protocol Task Force to help develop those solutions; and “like” the City Building Blocks Facebook Page

The goal of a Smart City “From a government perspective, the goal of a “Smart City” is to integrate public agencies, systems and infrastructures into one holistic system.” Global Apps Highlight Paper Another way of saying this is: “The smartness of a city is a measure of how well it is able to bring together all of its resources in order to tackle the challenges and grasp the opportunities it faces.”

What is a Smart City? “A Smart City represents a network of interconnected information systems using smart sensors that creates value by applying advanced technologies to search, access, transfer, and process information. Global Apps Highlight Paper

Standards are about making sure that things will work And that they will fit together with other components Standards are building blocks How do standards fit in?

Smart city standards ensure that city systems will work effectively And that they will fit together with other city systems What are Smart City standards?

Smart city standards need to cover everything needed to implement a solution And it all needs to fit together! What kinds of standards?

Let’s think about data! In order for a city to become smarter, increasing amounts of useful data within the city needs to be: collected, pulled together, analysed, made available, and used to help the city work better

A range of standards is needed Technical and connectivity standards Data format standards Ontology standards Search and labelling standards to help find out who has data that would be useful to you or who could easily collect the data you need Standards to enable a simple process to “buy” and “sell” that data –Pricing – how to determine appropriate and acceptable prices –Contract obligations – what rights and obligations are transferred and what remain with the original owner Standards to maintain data security and privacy when data from one source is merged with another

These all need to be tackled together This requires people with different sets of expertise working on the different parts of the value chain, in parallel with each other. This is tough work and we need exceptional people like you, to help us build the blocks that will build the smart city.

My invitation I invite you all to join the City Protocol Task Force We are setting up teams of experts to develop solutions for specific city problems in an open and transparent way In other words, to design the building blocks for a smart city Why not be a part of it?

Next steps! Register on: And - “like” the City Building Blocks page on Facebook!
