The History of Newton’s Laws Sir Isaac Newton described the relationship between motion and force in the laws that we now call Newton’s laws of motion. His laws apply to a wide range of motion like a caterpillar crawling on a leaf, a person riding a bicycle, or a rocket blasting off into space. Objects Tend to Maintain Their State of Motion. Inertia-the tendency of an object to resist being moved or, if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object.

Inertia Is Related to an Object’s Mass Matter resists any change in motion. An object will remain at rest until something makes it move. Mass is a measure of inertia. An object with a small mass has less inertia than an object with a large mass.
