Year 5/6 Information Literacy Using Online Databases to find Newspapers & Magazine Articles 1

Sometimes you might need to look up a topic in a newspaper or magazine. This is a really useful if you want to find up-to-date information or details about an issue.

Rather than spend ages flicking through a newspaper we can use an online database to find the information. At this school we use:

This database holds newspaper and magazine articles from sources all over the world. Sometimes the articles are rewritten to make them easier for you to understand or because they were originally in another language.

Global NewsBank holds articles from 43 Australian newspapers. This includes: The Age The Australian The Herald Sun Leader Newspapers MX Sportsman The Weekly Times

Activity Locate Global Newsbank on the Library’s homepage HINT! Find the link to E-Databases FIRST, then look for Global Newsbank Click on the link for Global Newsbank THEN Open up this worksheet: Newsdbases_6

In the space provided on your worksheet, list at least 6 different overseas “news providers” from the Source Lists. Also include the name of the city each news provider comes from. HINT! You will find the Source Lists on the LEFT SIDE of the Global Newsbank homepage.

On the left side of the screen you will find HOT TOPICS Investigate a topic that interests you To do this, use the search terms suggested at the end of the topic.

On you worksheet, complete the following questions: 1.Write down the topic you have chosen 2.What is the name of the news source that the article came from? 3.What type of news media do you think it is? (Radio, Newspapers, Internet news etc) 4.What is the title of the article? 5.What is the article’s publication date? 6.Who wrote the article? 7.Copy the article’s URL into the space provided on your worksheet. 8.Write down what the article is about (in your own words). 9.Compose a bibliographic entry for the article you use from the Global Newsbank website (see the example on the next page).

Format Author Surname, Author Initial. (year, Month Day). Title of article. [On-line]. Name of Periodical, Vol, pp.. Available: Global Newsbank Accessed on date. Example Jones, I. (2003, June 13). Green turtles in the Great Barrier Reef. [On-line]. Eco, Vol 6, Available: Global Newsbank. Accessed on How to write a bibliographic entry for subscriber- based online newspaper or magazine articles.

Now you need to: SAVE a copy of your worksheet on your G drive a copy to PRINT out a copy to put in your Library folder NOW YOU NEED TO:

Print out a copy of this document: Assess_newspapers1 This is your assessment rubric for this topic Circle the bits that relate to you Could you have done better?
