If you want to be encouraged to continue studying science at a tertiary level the PICSE Industry Placement Scholarship (IPS) is for you. The activities we engage in during the scholarship program relate specifically to the sciences that support primary industries in QLD. Our aim is to show you the range of rewarding career paths available for science graduates in the primary industries. Employment prospects in primary industry science are excellent. Currently jobs for scientists in primary industries still double the number of graduates available to fill the roles. The future looks very exciting for scientists as we prepare to face the challenges of; food security for a rapidly growing population, adaptation of crops and farming systems in response to climate change, protection of the environment, water management and the processing of high quality, safe foods. Details of the Program The Scholarship program consists of a free five- day Residential Camp in December and five days of Industry Placement in January. In 2011 the Residential Camp will run from 28 November to 2 December and be held at the University of Southern Queensland. The program is action packed and you will visit organisations such as Monsanto, Robert Wicks Pest Animal Research Centre, Queensland College of Wine Tourism, Pacific Seeds and Department of Primary Industries & Fisheries. The Industry Placement, which can occur in any week in January, involves working alongside industry scientists and researchers in their workplace. The industry scientists chosen are working on research that is at the cutting edge of science. Following the Industry Placement you will participate in a Reporting Back Session where we get to hear all about your experiences of the placement program. During this event you will be awarded your scholarship cheque of $300 and a Certificate of Completion for the program. The USQ IPS program is part of a larger national initiative to encourage students to engage in tertiary science. These Residential Camps take place at seven other partner sites across the nation. Each year we select two scholarship students and award them with the Chief Scientist’s Travelling Scholarship. The two winning students will take part in a Residential Camp on exchange at one of our other activity centres, with all costs of travel and accommodation for the experience being covered by the scholarship. Applications for this scholarship close on 16 September Applicants will then be short- listed and interviews conducted from mid- October.

How can the Industry Placement Program benefit year 11 and 12 science students?  By experiencing ‘real life’ situations you can gain a much broader perspective of the huge range of career opportunities available, perhaps even in areas you have not previously considered!  By gaining a better appreciation of the importance of science to industry and to the community.  By having the opportunity to get to know a potential future employer during your Industry Placement.  By gathering in-depth advice about career options from experts at the campus who are able to relate study options to career opportunities. Selection Process 1.Completed application forms must be received by Mary McGilvray by 16 September 2011, the last day of term three. 2.Short-listing of applicants will take place based on information provided in the application form, as well as a verbal reference given by the nominated science teacher. 3.Short-listed applicants will be contacted in early term four to arrange an interview time. 4.All applicants will be notified of the result of their application by mail.
