Food Chains

“Phrase of the day...” It’s the circle of life. Does anyone know what this means?

“Phrase of the day...” The circle of life is the journey that we make in our lives, from birth to death.

“Phrase of the day...” The circle of life is made of four stages: Stage 1: Birth – when you first become alive! Stage 2: Growth – when you grow up big and strong! Stage 3: Reproduction – when you have children! Stage 4: Death – so the circle of life can start over again.

“Phrase of the day...” So... When someone says “it’s the circle of life” they mean: We are all connected. We all gain energy from the animals that lived before us.

What is a food chain? Every living thing needs energy in order to live and grow. Every living thing gets energy from the food it eats.

What is a food chain? Plants use sunlight, water and nutrients to get energy. Nutrients: something that a living thing needs to grow and survive.

What is a food chain? Animals get energy from eating other, smaller animals. OR Animals get energy from eating plants. Plants get energy from the sun.

What is a food chain? Large animals belong at the top of the food chain, because they eat small animals. They often have sharp teeth!

What is a food chain? Small animals belong in the middle of the food chain, because they eat insects and plants.

What is a food chain? Plants need sunlight to grow.

Example sunplants grasshopper mousesnakehawk

Let’s make a food chain! I need 3 volunteers! GrassSunGrasshopper Which order do they go?

Let’s make a food chain! I need 2 more volunteers! Lizard Eagle Add them to the food chain!

Instructions 1. You will be divided into groups of 6 2. You will choose a member of your food chain and write in on a piece of paper 3. You will hold on to your piece of paper so everyone in your group can see it 4. You will order yourself into a food chain 5. You will present your food chain to the class

Food Chains GRASS SNAKE SUN OWL FROG BEETLE

Food Chains ORCA/KILLER WHALE SHRIMP ALGAE SUN FISH PENGUIN

Remember Use English!!!

Food Chains 1. 2.

Conclusion Large animals belong at the top of the food chain Small animals belong in the middle of the food chain Waste, plants and the sun belong at the bottom of the food chain

Conclusion Everything is connected in the “circle of life” – even you and me belong to the food chain!

Thank you! Class is over!
