Charles Darwin Naturalist who traveled the HMS Beagle to the Galapagos Islands and discovered finches… The finches all had similarities but different beaks due to the different types of foods they ate. The finches changed because of speciation.

Evolution Inherited changes in a population over time. Evidence that supports evolution: Similar skeletal structures DNA Embryonic structures

Adaptations! Structures and behaviors that help an organism find food, protection, and move from place to place. Examples:

Theory of Evolution? NATURAL SELECTION! Over production Genetic Variation – organisms are genetically diverse because of mutations! Struggle to Survive Successful Reproduction

Natural Selection Who blends in? Who stands out?

Speciation Reasons for a population to separate… Mountain range forming Canyons forming Lake forming Islands separating or forming

Selective Breeding Organisms with favorable traits being bred for those specific traits.

Selective Breeding vs. Natural Selection Natural selection occurs when population members with advantageous traits are able to survive and reproduce. They pass on their advantageous traits to their offspring. Selective breeding occurs when humans breed individuals with desirable traits in order to create offspring with the same desirable traits.

Steps of Natural Selection Overproduction Genetic Variation Struggle to Survive Successful Reproduction

Good Luck Studying!
