RAM (Random Access Memory)

Definition  Form of computer data storage  The computer’s short term memory (Disk space is long term)  Computer chips that temporarily store data to enhance computer performance  Uses integrated circuits that allow data to be accessed in any “random” order  Doesn’t matter where data is if its related or not

Volatile Memory  Loses contents once power is cut.  Form of electricity while computer is on  Pulls out what it needs at the moment from long term memory  Can be saved when computer is shut down properly.  When computer boots up, RAM fills with programs automatically loaded at start-up

Different Types  Architecture and speed  Much faster but more expensive than permanent memory  Must be compatible with motherboard  Newer - Dynamic RAM  Older – Single In-line Memory Modules (SIMMS) or Dual In- Line Memory Modules (DIMMS)

Other storage…  Magnetic discs  Optical discs  Flash memory  Rely on physical movement  Longer data transfer and retrieval time  Not as fast as RAM

History Early type: magnetic core memory ( ) Used until 1960’s

How it works….

Can you install it yourself?

Can you install it yourself?  Cheap  Anywhere from $14 - $600 depending on what you want

Buying it….  Check out consumer reports: computers/computers-internet/computers/computer- buying-advice/computer-features/laptop-features.htm Easiest way: Best Buy In-Store ($ $499.99)
