 John Dante is a teenage boy living a rather idyllic life in Pittsburgh at the onset of World War II. His life changes dramatically after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor.  John’s father, a gentle, intelligent man, is a scientist who works at the university.  John’s mother is a typical pre–World War II mother. She has been a full-time mother to John and his sister, but after the war starts, she goes to work in a munitions factory.  Diane, John’s sister, is in her early twenties. She attends the university and plans to become a teacher. A pretty, sensitive young woman, Diane receives a great deal of attention from boys.  Ginny Burton is John’s love interest. Her family has just moved to Pittsburgh, and they are less well off than John’s family. Ginny is an independent thinker and a free spirit, and John finds her to be a remarkable person.
