Defining Recovery Mental health recovery is a journey of healing and transformation for a person with mental health problems to achieve full human potential or “personhood” in leading a meaningful life in communities of his or her choice. 3

4 Fundamental Principles of Recovery Strength-based Nonlinear Self-directed Individualized and person-centered Empowering Holistic Peer supported Involves society’s respect for consumers and their rights Involves a consumer’s courage, responsibility, and hope in moving toward recovery

5 Lead Transformation by― Educating others about the meaning of recovery and the value of hope in achieving it. Working with providers to develop person- centered planning and individualized recovery plans. Sharing your stories—YOU are the evidence. Being involved in your State’s mental health planning process. Identifying leaders who can expand the recovery concept.
