Chapter 9: Outline 1. Postmodern Religion 2. Knowing the Times 3. God and His Word 4. Dealing with Sin 5. Hell 6. How do we Address These Changes?

The Book of Judges

Judges 2:7, 10, 12, :19, 21, 35 3:5–6

How quickly a generation can change...Ignorance of God...Ignorance of God’s works

Embracing the “gods” of society = forsaking God. = provoking God’s anger.

They did not listen to God’s spokesmen They did not obey God’s commands

They did not cease from their error They were stubborn

Terminology

Theology "A religious belief system about God or ultimate reality. Theology commonly refers to the ordered, systematic study or interpretation of the Christian faith and experience of God based on God’s divine self-revelation."

Orthodoxy "Literally, “right praise” or “right belief” (as opposed to heresy). Being orthodox implies being characterized by consistency in belief and worship with the Christian faith as witnessed to in Scripture"

Orthopraxy "Orthopraxy, literally meaning “right practice,” is living out the known and experienced truth of the Christian faith in love and justice."

Liberal (theological) "Movement in Protestant theology since the nineteenth century that is dominated by the goal of modifying Christianity so as to make it consistent with modern culture and science. Liberalism rejects the traditional view of Scripture as an authoritative propositional revelation from God in favor of a view that sees revelation as a record of the evolving religious experiences of humankind. It sees Jesus more as ethical teacher and model rather than as divine atoner and redeemer."

Emerging church (emergent) Movement heavily influence by postmodern thinking and theology, which is theologically liberal, which weakens claims on biblical truth and embraces as much of culture as they see fit, believe that preaching the Bible as objective truth is ineffective and has a focus on global issues. They are big on “love” and quiet on sin, redemption and Hell.

The Five “P’s” of the Emerging Church Protest - they protest conservative Christianity. Postmodern - this has to do with their view toward truth. Praxis oriented - it’s more important what you do than what you believe. Post-evangelical - they do not like many elements of conservative Christianity, especially exclusivity. Political - they are generally strong and active Democrats, they are anti-conservative and anti- republican.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

What can we learn from the emerging church movement? They are good reading the times--they understand culture. They push for “authenticity,” or a anti-going-through-the- motions. They are very interested in reaching outsiders, those who are different. While misled, they are action oriented. 1 Corinthians 9:22 Mark 7:6 1 Thes. 3:12 James 2:20

How do we respond? Hold fast to what we believe (2 Timothy 1:13) Live out our faith without apology Recognize the inspired message as eternal, not temporal (Jude 3) We must see the utter uniqueness of Jesus as Lord. Let us live with hope. We must appeal to postmodern people with our biblical lives. We must continue to worship in spirit and in truth.
