Education – 4 August 2011 HUMANITARIAN ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING - LIBERIA SECTORAL UPDATE

PROGRESS education sector NIMBA Along Butuo Axis border thousands of children are now targeted by education interventions: 5 UNICEF tents erected and school rehabilitation ongoing. In Bahn camp, 718 primary and 69 children (3-5) attended school and ECD services. 100% children reached with Ivorian text-books In Logwato axis only 30% children attended school out of 1829 due to Liberian school holidays. Routine recreational activities provided to 557 Ivorian and Liberian children. In Gborplay axix: Ivorian schools closed Ivorian schools in Nimba will close from 18 to 29 August, to prepare for the next school year Need to keep the children in safe spaces (CFS)

PROGRESS education sector GRAND GEDEH 6,313 refugee children and 2,697 Liberian children reached with primary school services and education supplies children (1028 refugees) reached with ECD services. In Zwedru – 80% Ivorian children (urban refugees) enrolled in school. MARYLAND 416 Ivorian children from Little Wlebo camp attending classes in Government school next to camp. 385 children attending in-camp school (TLS) In Harper City classes resumed for 467 urban refugee children in 4 schools. Ongoing radio campaign to reach 100% enrollment. Espansion of education services to border areas (registration and teacher mobilization ongoing in Pleebo, Cavalla, Yookudi)

CHALLENGES education sector Central: need a MOE guidelines to implement Accelerated Learning Programs for 2 years in the 2011/12 school year (starting 30 Aug) In Grand Gedeh very fluid population and ongoing relocations Schools in camps not ready for existing residents In all counties WASH related challenges Youth gap! looking for partners (secondary edu/vocational) Lack of school feeding affects attendance protection concern
