PROGRESS education sector NIMBA Along Butuo Axis, 1,300 Ivorian children have attended primary school and 400 are getting ECD services. School rehabilitation ongoing and ECD tent erected in 1 location. Community awareness raising on role and responsibilities of community ongoing. In Bahn camp, primary education and ECD services provided to 866 and 160 children respectively. 727 primary school children received textbooks. In 11 designated HCs along Butuo, Logwato and Ghorplay axis, primary education and ECD services were provided to 1712 and 496 refugee children respectively. Routine recreational activities provided to 669 Ivorian and Liberian children attending school along the Logwato axis
PROGRESS education sector GRAND GEDEH 6,313 refugee children and 2,697 Liberian children reached with primary school services and education supplies children (1028 refugees) reached with ECD services. In Zwedru – 250 children enrolled out of 400 (target). More schools identified. MARYLAND 280 Ivorian children from Little Wlebo camp attending classes in Government school next to camp. In Harper City 6 schools hosting 900 urban refugee children. After teacher relocation only 3 schools are currently running for refugees. 4 schools identified in Pleebo 6 tents erected in LW camp
CHALLENGES education sector Central: need a MOE policy to implement Accelerated Learning Programs for 2 years in the 2011/12 school year (starting 30 Aug) In Grand Gedeh very fluid population and ongoing relocations Schools in camps not ready for existing residents In Solo, need to finalize forest clearance for TLS No access to POLAR (GG) due to bad conditions of bridge (Zleh – Gae) Some WASH related challenges (Janson, Toe Town) In Nimba border Deplorable road conditions Lack of WASH facilities Lack of food affects attendance
WAY FORWARD education sector Education Sector (Monrovia) to plan the ALP implementation in August, for implementation starting from August 30. In GG UNICEF advocates for school construction and provides logistical support to partners to fill gaps/accelerate implementation Advocacy - WASH interventions need to be adequate to attendance figures (Janzon: 1 school latrine for 807 students!) Continued advocacy on road accessibility/maintenance Continued advocacy on SCHOOL FEEDING for REFUGEES attending ECD and PRIMARY in camps and HC Sensitization Day on The protective role of Education in Emergencies MOE/Edu-Cp sectors 8 June, Monrovia EIE training 14 June, in Grand Gedeh (Zwedru) Formal and Non-formal education at Border in Nimba NON FORMAL EDUCATION TASK FORCE – MAPPING/HARMONIZATION (work in progress)
