Education – 21 July 2011 HUMANITARIAN ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING - LIBERIA SECTORAL UPDATE

PROGRESS education sector NIMBA Along Butuo Axis, 1,300 Ivorian children have attended primary school and 400 are getting ECD services. School rehabilitation ongoing and ECD tent erected in 1 location. In Bahn camp, primary education and ECD services provided to 866 and 160 children respectively. 200 refugee adolescents and adults completed skills courses in the area of tie and dye, soap making, baking and hair dressing In 11 designated HCs along Butuo, Logwato and Ghorplay axis, primary education and ECD services were provided to 1712 and 496 refugee children respectively Routine recreational activities provided to 240 Ivorian and Liberian children attending school along the Logwato axis

PROGRESS education sector GRAND GEDEH 5859 refugee children and 3,200 Liberian children reached with primary school services and education supplies children (1028 refugees) reached with ECD services. 15 teachers identified for Zwedru city, 50 primary students enrolled MARYLAND 280 Ivorian children from Little Wlebo camp attending classes in Government school next to camp. In Harper City 6 schools hosting 900 urban refugee children. After teacher relocation only 3 schools are currently running for refugees. Distribution of textbooks and other education supplies on going Temporary learning spaces being erected in the camp

CHALLENGES education sector New government policy awaited strategies In Nimba low attendance and increased school drop-out ! In Zwedru city, low enrollment after radio campaign Instead of conducting catch up classes, some partners reported to have stopped classes, MOE in Nimba agreed to close for holidays In Solo camp, need to clear forest to create space for TLS No access to POLAR (GG) due to bad conditions of bridge Toe Town 30% teachers returned to IC Road accessibility effective programming Shortage of qualified teachers relocation from Ferguson to camp

WAY FORWARD education sector Nimba: improve coordination and support to MOE/IP to understand key priorities in the EIE response. Closely monitor Ips. Use new government policy/results of Rapid Joint Needs Assessment for EHAP and evidence based programming In Zwedru city: change communication strategy with refugee committee and churches Advocacy partners to maximise time for catch up classes Accelerate clearance of forest in Solo camp, improve conditions of bridge to Polar/Ziah Continued advocacy on road accessibility/maintenance Identification/training of teachers /refresher training Sensitization Day on The protective role of Education in Emergencies MOE/Edu-Cp sectors 8 June, Monrovia EIE training 14 June, in Grand Gedeh (Zwedru) Formal and Non-formal education at Border in Nimba NON FORMAL EDUCATION TASK FORCE – MAPPING/HARMONIZATION (work in progress)
