1. Private Spaces on Family Tree

What’s different?

Each Family Tree user now has a private space that allows users to manage their own private information. The information in that space can only be seen by the individual user and no one else. Information that someone else has added about living people, their relationships, and their data will be stored in their own private space. Living people cannot be sourced or found by ID # or name. In the future it may be possible to share living spaces among family members.

Dealing with living individuals in a member’s pedigree has been an issue. Incorrect information could not be corrected except by the member’s ward clerk. On August 1, 2014, FamilySearch instituted a new handling of living persons in Family Tree. Living individuals in New FamilySearch were being copied to Family Tree where they could be changed directly. The process of copying living persons is now complete. With the advent of private spaces the rules change. You no longer have to go to the ward clerk in order to change living information. You can do it yourself. A New Handling of Living People

When a ward clerk records a person deceased, then Church membership will create a deceased person in Family Tree, making it public. The ordinances that the person had done while living will be recorded on that copy. In your private space you will need to add the information that shows the person deceased. You then need to search for Possible Duplicates and merge with the membership version. What happens when someone dies?

2. Audio File Upload to Memories on Family Tree Using a browser on a mobile device or a computer, you can upload audio files via the Memories options or directly through the Family Tree. The title, description, upload, tag, attach, details, album, report abuse, and other options all work the same for audio files as they do for other memory types (photos, documents, and stories). FamilySearch FamilySearch

3. Record Hints The Record Hints box in the upper right corner of the Person detail page contains suggested sources that can be reviewed and connected to your ancestor.

Clicking on the Record Hint brings up a transcription of the record. You can either click on Review and Attach or View Image. William Yartz

4. Index to Find A Grave FamilySearch published the collection on 16 November Like the index to BillionGraves, the collection contains basic information about the burial, but doesn’t include headstone photos. Both collections provide links to the respective websites, where you can view the photos and possibly other information for no charge. William Yartz

5. Descendancy View The descendancy view shows the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of an ancestor. Icons assist while in the descendancy view. Stephen Lucore descendancy

5. Get Help Changes FamilySearch has improved their help system. When you go to Get Help you can see specific topics from the drop down menu. Note that you can get Self Help or Contact Us. In the Self Help section there are links to Quick Start To FamilySearch, Getting Started, Help Center, Learning Center and Research Wiki.

Self Help displays context sensitive help. In other words, the menu changes depending on what page you are on. For example, this is what you see on the Self Help menu when you are on Family Tree.

6. Mobile Apps The FamilySearch Tree app allows you to navigate through your ancestors using the pedigree or detail views, including photos, stories, and audio for that specific ancestor. The FamilySearch Memories app makes collecting, preserving, and sharing your favorite family memories (photos, stories, and spoken words) easy and convenient wherever you are.
