Get Together Aalto ENG Introduction to the themes of planning and instruction of doctoral studies Kirsi Virrantaus

1. What are: study planning & supervising and instruction ?? 2. Some guidelines about study planning 3. The new guidelines for supervisors, instructors and doctoral students at Aalto University Topics of my presentation

Some guidelines about study planning The purpose of doctoral studies is for the student –to acquire more profound scientific knowledge and skills in scientific research and their practical application than is provided by master’s degree studies The key element in doctoral studies is –to acquire the skills required in research and the application of research results. The doctoral education at the School of Engineering equips the student with –skills in scientific research and expert tasks. The graduated doctor can work with –a wide variety of tasks in international environments in all sectors of society.

Study structure The recommended time as full time student achieving doctoral degree is 3-4 years. Research field –Module T, ECTS credits Studies in supplementary field –Module S, ECTS credits Scientific practices and principles –Module Y, 5-15 ECTS credits

How to earn the credits ? Courses (traditional exams) and seminars the courses approved for doctoral studies are generally marked in the Study Programme with the letter L or P, printed literature on which one is later examined –chosen as far as possible in accordance with the personal study objectives of each student, Courses on a doctoral level completed before the Master’s degree can be approved for inclusion in doctoral degree modules if they were not part of the Master’s degree Doctoral level courses in other universities can also be included in the modules.

Research field and Supplementary field cr; cr Students select their research field from the list of postgraduate research fields No one professor is responsible for both the research field module and the supplementary studies module. Studies in the suppelementary field support the research field and the writing of the thesis. This module comprises studies in another postgraduate research field or studies drawn from several research fields that form one entity. Module studies can be taken at other universities but also in such cases the professor responsible must be from the Aalto University School of Science and Technology.

Scientific practices and principles 5…15 cr The objective of these studies is to give the students knowledge of the basic scientific concepts and introduce them to the key characteristics of research and scientific knowledge and to the most important research methods of their field. studies in research methodology, research ethics, and the history and philosophy of science as well as academic writing. Part of the module can consist of learning about university practices, such as tuition and research work guidance. It can contain preparatory tasks of a scientific kind related to the research project, as well as presentations at scientific conventions in the field. However students cannot count the research work itself toward the requisite theoretical courses.
