Education - 7 July 2011 HUMANITARIAN ACTION COMMITTEE MEETING - LIBERIA SECTORAL UPDATE

PROGRESS education sector NIMBA In Bahn Camp and 16 HC sector partners are currently reaching all 2,639 refugees with primary school services/recreational activities and 845 with ECD services. New school construction complex completed in Bahn camp. 22 teachers identified for training. GRAND GEDEH 5,600 refugees reached with primary school services /supplies. 1,200 Children reached with ECD services. MARYLAND 280 Ivorian children from Little Wlebo camp attending classes in Government school next to camp. In Harper City, 6 schools hosting 900 urban refugee children. VIA now in Maryland distribution of textbooks/education supplies on-going.

CHALLENGES education sector New government policy awaited influnces strategies Shortage of qualified teacheers low quality of teaching/learning Drop in attendance figures /irregular attendance in ECD centers/ primary schools in some host communities Population still fluid in all counties adaptation by IPs Road accessibility affecting effective programming /delivery of supplies
