Who We Are Jocelyn Fuentes - Chairperson Ashlee Paxton-Turner - Vice Chairperson Brent Shawcross - Secretary Andrew Koch Trevor Davis Anthony Green Stefan LeNoach Trisha Holden Anneliesse Orlino

What We Do Serve as a liaison between youth in the community and local government Work to create a “youth friendly” community Advocate and increase awareness of youth issues Develop as leaders and serve as role models for others

Our Process Survey youth Participate in focus groups and community planning meetings Draw conclusions from data and our own experiences Use information to make an impact and put our ideas in motion

Things We Have Done Toured the Youth Career Café in Hampton with County staff Piloted Teen Job Flyer Volunteered for over 10 County special events Partnered with HTSAC’s youth group to implement Youth Forum Participated in Parks & Recreation’s Master Plan and several County Comprehensive Plan Meetings

Home Run Derby In memory of David McLane and Chris Gavora, the Youth Council created a Home Run Derby last year as a way to raise money for their respective foundations. Over $500 dollars was raised for the scholarship foundations

Our second annual event was expanded to a Baseball Extravaganza, that included a silent auction, a home run derby and other baseball activities The Dave Gosselin Foundation was also added due to his contribution to the local baseball community Over $1000 was raised for the three scholarship foundations Baseball Extravaganza

Youth Survey The Youth Council created a youth survey in order to find out the needs of teens in the areas of: Teen Facilities Physical Health / Activity Community Activities / Leisure Time Transportation Job Opportunities

Youth Survey Survey administered in Spring th, 9 th and 11 th graders in all local middle & high schools (during home rooms) 14 total questions that included one open ended comment question 1408 youth responded (893 high school, 515 middle school)

Youth Survey Results (high school) If you could decide what goes in the center for teens, which of the following would you choose? (choose all that apply) If there were a center dedicated to teens in James City County, how often would you use the facility?

Youth Survey Results (high school) Do you feel transportation is a challenge for youth in James City County? Do you feel there are enough job opportunities for youth in James City County? Comments from the open ended question: School should start later Need a bus stop further in Toano

Teen Facilities Our goal is to be a main factor in the decision making process of future teen facilities / activities Surveys indicate the need for a teen ‘friendly’ facilities in the central part of the county Affordable / Safe Provides ‘drop-in’ & structured programs Food / Music Accessible through public transportation

Future Plans… Continue / Expand Baseball Extravaganza Collaborate with 4-H/Making Waves and the HTSAC/F.R.E.E. Youth Leadership Groups Continue volunteering with community programs Assist with potential future teen facilities Advocate for alternative transportation Expand communication & marketing of county issues to youth/teens

Our Suggestions More affordability for youth/teens in County facilities and programs Less development in county More bikes paths, sidewalks, etc. throughout County Central area of town (“downtown”) to centralize activities Frisbee Golf area (maybe in Freedom Park)
