Official Definitions Drug abuse can damage a person’s health and ability to function effectively. 4

Official Definitions The FDA’s definition of drug use may vary from the definitions of society. drug use The taking of a drug for its medically intended purpose, and in the appropriate amount, frequency, strength, and manner 5

Official Definitions Drug misuse can lead to dependence. drug misuse The taking of a drug for its medically intended purpose, but not in the appropriate amount, frequency, strength, or manner

Official Definitions Drug abuse can result in damage to a person’s health or ability to function. drug abuse The deliberate taking of a drug for anything other than a medical purpose.

Society’s Definition Lawmakers have passed laws related to drug abuse. In our society, the use of mind-altering drugs is illegal. 8

Society’s Definition Some individuals try to define drug use differently. Some people may say that they engage in recreational drug use. recreational drug use A term made up to describe their drug use, by people who claim their drug taking produces no harmful social or health effects

Society’s Definition Some people who take mind-altering drugs call themselves drug users, not abusers. People who use drugs socially may see themselves as drug users, and not drug abusers. However, there is no such thing as mere “use” of a drug. Taking a drug for a purpose that is non-medical is drug abuse. 10
