 30°-50 °N and 30 °-40 °S latitudes  Central and southern coast of California  Coastal areas of Mediterranean Sea  Coastal and western Australia  Chilean coast of South America  Cape Town region of South Africa

 Temperature  Has a Mediterranean climate- hot, dry summers and mild, moist (not rainy) winters.  Temperate (between 30°F and 100°F)  Average temperature is about 59°F  Rainfall  Only about inches per year, most of it comes in the winter.  High chances of fire due to lack of rainfall, dryness, and hot temperatures.  Physical Features  Found on rocky hills and mountain slopes.

 Small, dense, spiny, evergreen shrubs  Scrub oak, poison oak  Pines, Cacti  Cork and olive trees  Yucca Wiple  Chamiso  Many plants have fire resistant roots, and some plant seeds won’t germinate until there is a fire  Some have hairy leaves to collect moisture more efficiently.

The chaparral burns every yrs in order to refresh its vegetation.

 Are usually small, nocturnal, and don’t need a lot of water.  Lizards  Jackals  Mule deer  Coyotes  Lady bug and praying mantis  Honeybee  Some snakes Horned LizardHorned Lizard MuleDeerMuleDeer CoyoteCoyote JackalJackal

Why is the chaparral sometime referred to as a Mediterranean climate? 1. Because it has hot, dry summers and cold, moist winters. 2. Because it’s located primarily in the Mediterranean area. 3. Because people didn’t have anything else to call it.

Why is there an abundance of fires recorded in areas classified as chaparrals? 1. Because of reckless humans 2. Because of lightning strikes that mix with the dry climate and dead organic matter 3. Because of prevailing winds 4. Because clouds reflect infrared radiation, so when the sun does come out, it heats the landscape too quickly
