Capítulo 5B Saying what is happening: Quick Review of The Present Progressive Tense

Present Participle The present participle is the –ing form of the verb. It is formed by removing the infinitive ending of the verb: hablar > habl- Then add the correct present participle ending: habl- > hablando = speaking

Present Participles -ar verbs: hablar – hablando = speaking -er verbs: comer – comiendo = eating -ir verbs: vivir – viviendo = living * There are only 2 endings: -ando and - iendo ( -er and –ir verbs are alike)

Give the present participles for the following infinitives pensar pensando thinking buscar buscando looking for

salir saliendo leaving / going out poner poniendo putting

dibujar dibujando drawing ver viendo seeing

alquilar alquilando renting escribir escribiendo writing

nadar nadando swimming comprender comprendiendo understanding

jugar jugando playing tocar tocando playing

Irregular present participles dormir (ue, u) durmiendo sleeping sentir (ie, i) sintiendo feeling, regretting

You can identify an irregular present participle in the dictionary: Example: dormir(ue,u) The second vowel in the parenthesis indicates the irregularity. * durmiendo

decir diciendo saying, telling leer leyendo reading

oír oyendo hearing poder pudiendo being able

traer trayendo bringing venir viniendo coming

But you cannot use a present participle alone in a sentence. Yo jugando al béisbol I playing baseball. - Incorrect

You need a helping verb. I am playing baseball This is called the present progressive tense. It expresses action in progress presently or actions going on right now. But how are we going to express am in the above sentence?

Present Progressive Tense = Estar + Present Participle Estoy – I am Estás – You are Está – He is She is You are Estamos - We are Estáis - You are Están - They/You are Present Participle – alquilar – alquilando (renting) (-ing) leer - leyendo (reading) decir – diciendo (saying) +

Put it together: Estoy dibujando I am drawing Estás comiendo You are eating Está saliendo He, she, is leaving or you (polite) are leaving

Estamos apagando We are turning off Estáis poniendo You are putting Están viviendo They / you are living

Instead of the helping verb estar, you may also use seguir, continuar, or venir. Sigo estudiando para el examen. I continue studying for the test. Continuamos cocinando la paella. We continue cooking the paella. Vienen corriendo en la casa. They come running into the house.

The Imperfect Progressive It expresses what was going on at a specific time in the past, often when something else happened.

Imperfect Progressive Tense = Estar + Present Participle Estaba – I was Estabas – You were Estaba – He was She was You were Estábamos – We were Estabais - You were Estaban - They/You were Present Participle – alquilar – alquilando (renting) (-ing) leer - leyendo (reading) decir – diciendo (saying) +

Give the correct imperfect progressive tense for each verb Vivir (yo) Estaba viviendo I was living Comer (nosotros) Estábamos comiendo We were eating

Patinar (ella) Estaba patinando She was skating Comer (tú) Estabas comiendo You were eating

Salir (Uds) Estaban saliendo You were leaving Estudiar (vosotros) Estabais estudiando You were studying

Bailar (Juanita) Estaba bailando Juanita was dancing Hacer (Los muchachos) Estaban haciendo The boys were doing

Cantar (el profesor) Estaba cantando The teacher was singing Vivir (Uds.) Estaban viviendo You were living

Irregulars

dormir (yo) estaba durmiendo I was sleeping poder (nosotros) estábamos pudiendo we were being able (not used)

preferir (ellas) estaban prefiriendo they were prefering sentir (tú) estabas sintiendo you were feeling/regretting

venir (Ud.) estaba viniendo you were coming

leer (Uds.) estaban leyendo you were reading (la clase) oír estaba oyendo the class was hearing

ir (Enrique) Estaba yendo Enrique was going

Again, instead of the helping verb estar, you may also use seguir, continuar, or venir. Seguía estudiando para el examen. I continued studying for the test. Continuábamos cocinando la paella. We continued cooking the paella. Venían corriendo en la casa. They came running into the house.
