Church History Review CHAPTER 7: The Low Middle Ages… ( A.D.) Church versus Empire

The Low Middle Ages… ( A.D.) Church vs. Empire France (Gaul) becomes Christian and the France’s King Charlemagne creates the Holy Roman Empire. The Papacy becomes totally corrupt. The Age of Feudalism begins.

The Low Middle Ages… ( A.D.) Church vs. Empire 1. France (Gaul) becomes Christian. In 800, the Pope crowns Charlemagne, king of France, as Holy Roman Emperor. Charlemagne promises to protect the Pope. Charlemagne forces pagans to convert to Christianity or die.

Issue: Relationship between Church and State

The Low Middle Ages… ( A.D.) Church vs. Empire 2. The Papacy becomes totally corrupt in The 800s and 900s. This is sometimes called the “papal pornocracy.” Popes & their families kill each other to get their son to become Pope. Popes have affairs and orgies in Vatican. One Pope exhumes body of predecessor, puts cadaver on Trial, cuts off blessing fingers, throws Body into Tiber River.

Cadaver Trial

Legend of “Pope Joan” Historians agree this is only a false legend. A statue of “Pope Joan” existed in Rome into the 1500s.

The Low Middle Ages… ( A.D.) Church vs. Empire 3. The Age of Feudalism begins.

The Age of the Vikings Vikings raid Christian monasteries and cities.
