Role of Women in Ancient Egypt Egyptian women had many rights in their lives. The women and men worked together and treated each other fairly. Today society's view on women is much different than in Ancient Egypt.

What Could Women Do? Egyptian women shared the same legal rights as men did. A women could have control over and, portable goods, servants, slaves, livestock, and money. She could also divorce her husband, and bring lawsuits to anyone else too. Women could also go out freely in public; and they were not forced to wear veils. Not many women committed crimes, but there were a few, such as tomb robbers.

They Didn’t… There were also certain things that women did not do. Such as they were not literate. Every one woman in 20 to 30 men could read or write. Women were also sometimes divorced if the husband found out they couldn’t have children. This action was, however, frowned upon by society.

Important Aspects of Life Marriage was a very important part of Egyptian life. It was almost portrayed as an obligation. A divorce was a very private matter. If a woman became pregnant she became highly respected in the community. Children were also a very significant part of Egyptian life. The children were named as soon as they were born so that they would have a name in the afterlife if they died young.
