China By: Alissa Kang

Land and Water China is the 3 rd largest country in Asia. In China mountains, plateaus, and highland, or raised areas mostly make China’s landforms. 50 years ago a strong and powerful nature forces created a landscape in East Asia, and now it is called India (It is located on the southwest of China). Enormous natural forces made lands for example volcanoes made mountains by the lava and the ashes. Earthquake caused some of the lands to sink or float up the ocean.

Land and Water In China there is a river called Yangzi, Yangzi is the most important river in China. The Yangzi river flows 3,915 miles to the East China sea which is (6,300 km). Huang He river flows through the most fertile land of China Plain. The North China Plains are covered with loess which are brownish yellow fertile soil. 70 percent of China’s people lives in rural places. Shanghai is located near Yangzi so over 12 million people lives in Shanghai

Land and Water Until now the natural forces causes some landscape to change its shapes l.net/images/ mayon_volca no.jpg

Climate and Vegetation The large part of China’s eastern part has a very hot and sunny weather and cool winter and rain The northern interior of China has a very hot weather and the weather can change to sold winter. To the south part Plateau of Tibet has a cool and dry climate. Monsoons powerfully attacks East Asia. By the attack of Monsoons Pacific Ocean winds blows toward the Asian continent.

Climate and Vegetation Also they bring rainfall that starts in June. The Japanese people call it ‘plum rain’ because it begins to rain when the plums begin to ripe on the trees. Also they cause wind that causes hot and humid weather in July. hinghamsc hools.com/ prs/teacher s/donovanl/ images/4se ason.jpg

Climate and Vegetation Climate affects the plants strongly. Bamboo in East Asia grows unbelievably fast during the wet season. Many small flower and shrubs grows rapidly in deserts of China after summer rains. And they are vanished when the weather returns back. The climate strongly affects the life in East Asia. The Huang He, or the yellow river got its name from a yellow brownish loess that was blown by the desert winds. The river picks up the loess and keeps it to the east on the north of China Plain.

Climate and Vegetation The loess which were carried by the Huang He covers a large 125,000 square mile (32,375,000 hectare) area near the river. But Huang He river also has a flood problem. But today we have a system dams that helps to control the waters. Still the river can over flow their banks in the monsoon time. Damaging flood gave them a nickname: “China’s Sorrow”

Natural Resources In East Asia oil is an important resource, oil could be expensive or too difficult to find. If the two Koreas share their mineral resources it’s going to be a good benefit. But they don’t want to share their minerals. (No wonder why they had a war..) Japan is a modern country and they importer of natural gas, coal, and oil. Japan also imports 95% of iron ore, copper, and tin.

Natural Resources But unlike the other East Asia, China has a enormous supply of natural recourses. com/images/pic/SPA/3166~Mi nerals-Chart-Posters.jpg

Natural Resources Parts of the East Asia have enormous forests. B ut still people mistreats the trees and cut trees. In the past people replanted the trees when they were cut down. But now people still import wood. Heavy rainfalls helps East Asia for developing w ater power. Water power is important to region’s industrial development. Pacific Ocean is also an important resource for East Asia to depend on. East Asians also practice aquaculture, or sea farming. They also raises fishes in the gigantic cages. And they also makes bed for shrimp and oysters by the artificial reefs.

Natural Resources In East Asian people farms on the land to feed their population or family. But only few parts of the land could be farmed in Korea, Japan, North Korea, China.. -_-… Farmers practice double-cropping so that they can grow the plants as double!! The plants grows fast on the fertile land and soil. Crops takes less place then the cattle so they need to work more hard to feed their country.

Historic Traditions Confucius was a man who lived in 1500 B.C. He taught people by telling them that they had duties and responsibility. Because of Confucius until now China is having a peace and beautiful country. For many histories China had made a major dynasties. content/uploads/2007/0 6/confucius.jpg

Historic Traditions China has made fascinating inventions throughout for many years. They invented things like: the fist book, paper, compass, paper money, Great Wall of China, and block printing. And lot more stuffs!!! Chinese leader was so proud of their country so they called their country as the Middle Kingdom. China was ruled by emperors and dynasties.

China’s Achievements Achievements models/chinahi st/images/yuan papermoney.jp g images. dragonwater. com/images/ products/149. jpg spiritualt ravelman.file s.wordpress. com/2007/12/ great_wall_of _china.jpg

Historic Traditions Even though Korea’s original people came from the north-central Asia, the history of Korea is tied with the history of China. Chinese people also moved to Korea’s peninsula and then they moved to the southern part of the peninsula. In old times China was far ahead of the rest of the world’s discoveries and invention, the discoveries has spread to Korea and Japan.

Historic Traditions East Asia didn’t have interest in other countries but the other countries had a interest in East Asia. Marco Polo believed that he visited China in 1200s and came back to Italy and talked about China. China and Japan wanted to be isolated but the Western countries couldn't be kept away. America and Europe began to produce good amounts of goods. East Asia was a good place to sell these goods.

Historic Traditions In 1853, U.S. Commodore Matthew sailed to Japan with 4 warships and forced Japan to grant trading rights. In few years Japan learned about Western ways and inventions. Japan soon became a strong country as they kept their own culture that was useful to them. Other countries wanted to control China’s wealth and power. As other powers entered China, it was sure that China wasn’t strong enough!

Historic Traditions The British, Japanese, Russian’s, French, and Dutch controlled over China. In 1899 United States announced that China should trade with all nations. Because of Chinese emperor there was a revolution in 1911 for growing foreign countries. While there was a revolution Japan was getting stronger day by day. And Japan attacked Asia and this war led to World War 2!!!!

Historic Traditions After years fighting United States defeated Japan and then United States helped Japan to recover and create a government. After the World War 2, there was a civil war between two groups of Nationalist that wanted to take over China. The Communist fought with Nationalist and won the war in 1949 and made China into communist nation.

Historical Traditions After World War 2, Korea found out that they were divided into 2 parts. They had a bloodthirsty war in North Korea invaded South Korea but the U.S. army helped South Korea and both side of the Korea never won. This war was kept on going for 3 years. Now there a border between the two Koreas.

People and Cultures When communist held the power they made great changes in China. They created communes. Many farmers lost their land. The farmers hated the communes. Food production fell so China suffered from food storage. Communities also didn’t allow people to have more than one child. Families with only one child got special privileges. While communism was taking place the position of women got better.

People and Cultures The women got to chose their own husbands, they got their own property, and get divorced. But still men still holds the power. Until now in China, cities also have examples of the old China. The streets are filled with tricycles. Even shops sell herbs still. In daily life in Korea, a family is still important. They live with their aunts, grandma, grandfather, mom, dad, uncles. In China the people wears modern ways. Most Korean also wears modern clothes.

People and Cultures Japan is the modern country in East Asia. Their rules are very strict. Japan has better modern technology than any of the East Asia’s countries. But they still tries their best to preserve the past. Japanese saw that the traditional arts were dying out. So the government began offering the lifetime salaries to the artists. China has different ethnic groups, and 19 and 20 Chinese people belongs to Han ethnic group. Han lives mostly in eastern and central China.

People and Cultures People believed that ancient Koreans came from many groups of nomads from Mongolia. Now in Korea the South Korea and North Korea is homogeneous and there are few minority groups. Since Japan is an isolated country the population of the Japan is mostly homogeneous. Anyways, Japan has a strict rule about immigration.

China In China most people of the people rides bicycle. In China’s City there are tall buildings and office buildings. When communist took power in 1949 and made the People’s Republic of China, they had a few major friends. Soviet Union supported the Communist’s side but their idea of running the communist society was different so the two nations disagreed with each other.

China When communist ruled China there was no peace. The China was trapped in hunger and food storage. When Mao Ze Dong ruled China everything has changed hugely. But he was not satisfied with his results because the economic growth was too slow. Mao Ze Dong made this huge mistake, he made a policy called ‘Great Leap Forward’ but later it found out to be a enormous step backwards.

Pictures of China These are some pictures related to China. e.insead.edu/c ontents/images /iStock_chinafla g.JPG brooklyn.cuny.e du/core9/phalsal l/images/mao.gif osbergD/pics/Shang hai%20005.jpg

China The ‘Giant Leap Forward’ cause the increase of the production and the communist forced people to work in large communes. The communist ordered a huge amount of iron and steel, so untrained workers were forced to make irons and steels. In 1966, Mao Ze Dong made a society called Cultural Revolution. He urged the students to have rebel against the teachers and their parents. The students also made a group called Red Guard.

China The Red Guard destroyed some the China’s most beautiful buildings. They beat up some of the China’s artists and doctors. The Red Guard began to threaten Mao’s government. Mao decided to end the Cultural Revolution in1969. The fight took 3 years killing thousands of men. After the Nationalist were lost to Communist they fled to Taiwan. The Nationalist followed the free enterprise. The free enterprise system allowed people to choose their own jobs.

China Taiwan was supported by foreign countries. The Taiwan and China claimed that they were the real China. As Taiwan sold electronic products Taiwan’s economic grew like the Jack and the Beanstalk!! Meanwhile, China was having trouble because the western countries refused to trade with China. China began to build relationships with western countries.

China Mao Ze Dong died in 1976, after Mao Ze Dong Deng Xiaoping became the leader of China around Deng Xiaoping allowed some free enterprise. In China life got much more easier. Today life got easier in China now China has strong economy. After Deng’s death in 1997, Jiang Zemin became China’s new leader. Jiang Zemin had strict rules over China’s people.

China China is still having trades with country that has poor citizens. China’s huge and enormous market for goods. And the Olympic is held in Beijing in 2008!! es/2007/08/16/267015/oly mpiclogo.jpg
