(or, How to melt ice and boil water) Phase Change Lab (or, How to melt ice and boil water)

Bunsen Burner Safety Safety goggles Burner air intake collar ½ way open Burner airflow valve (pin) closed all the way, then open 2 turns Prepare striker Gas on (stopcock parallel to hose) Strike: Away from your face Make GOOD sparks CLOSE to barrel CAN’T LIGHT? TURN OFF GAS!!!

Lab Instructions Set-up your lab according to example: Ringstand with wire screen 100mL beaker with a few ice cubes Add water to about the 50mL mark LabQuest temperature probe in split-cork **probe must not touch beaker** Record temperature of ice water in your DATA TABLE: Time(min) vs. Temp (⁰C) Light Bunsen burner 2 blue cones “roaring” sound Flame should barely touch wire screen Start timer Heat beaker and record temperature EVERY ½ MINUTE (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, etc…) Let water boil for about 5 minutes Done? Clean-up and graph your data (IV, DV) or (x,y) or (cause, effect) Leave-out the ringstand and wire screen (HOT!) Stools UNDER lab benches, safety goggles in cabinet, all other supplies returned
